Job description
Job Title: Consultant in Adult Psychiatry
Grade: Consultant
Location: Bedford, Bedfordshire
Working Hours: 40 hours per week
Rate: Competitive — details to be discussed upon application
We are seeking a highly experienced and committed Consultant in Adult Psychiatry to join our NHS client in Bedford, Bedfordshire. This full-time role will complement the current structure of consultant and trainee psychiatrists within the community mental health team. The post holder will support the multidisciplinary team in the management of patients subject to CPA, as envisaged in relevant NICE Guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership and psychiatric care for adults with a range of mental health conditions
- Act as an Approved Clinician and hold Section 12 approval, undertaking responsibilities related to detention, treatment, and discharge planning under the Mental Health Act
- Clinically lead a sub-team within the service, overseeing the delivery of care under CPA for a cohort of patients registered with specific primary care clinical networks
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnoses, and treatment planning
- Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team including pharmacy, psychology, social work, CPN colleagues, and trainees
- Supervise and support junior medical staff and trainees
- Participate in service development, clinical governance, and quality improvement initiatives
- Engage with families, carers, and external agencies to ensure holistic, person-centred care
Qualifications & Experience
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry (or within 6 months of CCT)
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
- Section 12 approval and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility to obtain)
- Extensive experience in adult psychiatry and multidisciplinary team working
- Strong leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
