Employee Relations Specialist

Location:

Fairfax, VA (Hybrid)

Duration:

6+ months contract (highly possible extension)

Short Description:

Seeking an Employee Relations Specialist to provide guidance to management and employees on performance concerns, conflict resolution, organizational changes, HR policies, employment laws, EEO, and adverse employment actions. The role promotes a fair and equitable work environment by addressing employee engagement, manager education, counseling, investigations, policy interpretation, and resolution of grievances.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate employee inquiries and provide appropriate advice and guidance
  • Conduct thorough, timely workplace investigations and recommend disciplinary actions (reprimand, suspension, reassignment, termination) to minimize legal risk
  • Create legally defensible documentation with accurate chronological histories
  • Resolve issues involving discipline, performance, attendance, personnel actions, and employment laws (EEO, AAP, FMLA, ADEA, ADA)
  • Analyze exit survey, turnover, and other employee data to produce metrics and recommendations
  • Research internal policies and past practices to ensure consistency in adverse employment actions
  • Review performance appraisals for fairness, consistency, accuracy, and legal compliance
  • Consult with legal counsel on litigation cases and provide case analysis
  • Represent the organization in unemployment hearings and appeals as needed
  • Lead or support HR projects, initiatives, and training for new team members

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal employment regulations
  • Knowledge of leave and disability laws (FMLA, ADA, substance abuse, etc.)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently and in team settings
  • High level of confidentiality and integrity
  • PHR/SHRM-CP or SPHR/SHRM-SCP certification desired
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced verbal and written communication
  • Advanced influencing, negotiation, and persuasion skills
  • Advanced presentation, organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Ability to build effective relationships through rapport, trust, diplomacy, and tact
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or equivalent experience
