The Senior Accountant is responsible for various entitlement grants and/or other large sources of Federal grant funding to the school system, the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA), bi-monthly Grants Roll forward Workbook, and the annual A-133 Audit.The Senior Accountant works closely with the Grants Management Supervisors, Accounting Controller and the Manager in charge of the Single (A-133) Audit.

Detailed Description
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Performs complex booking, analysis, monitoring and reconciliation of grant receivables, payables, encumbrances and expenditures;
- Applies principles and methods in accordance with established accounting regulations and procedures to ensure contract/grant compliance;
- Communicates with grant program managers and other stakeholders;
- Provides internal and external reports for the Grants Financial Management Office and grant program managers;
- Prepares audit schedules and expenditure reports for restricted grants related to the Schedule of Expenditure of Federal Awards (SEFA) required by OMB's Uniform Guidance, 2 CFR 200.501-.512 (Audits), the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), and the Maryland Department of Education Annual Financial Report (AFR);
- Works with external auditors on local/state/federal audits and serves as primary contact for the Single Audit;
- Interacts closely with general fund accountants to develop appropriate responses to audit findings and resolve compliance findings in audits related to restricted grants;
- Maintains close working relationship with cross-sectional grant teams in budget and grants development; provides internal technical assistance to grant accountants, technicians, and analysts serving as lead accountant on special grant assigned projects; and
- Perform related work as required.
Job Requirements
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
- Thorough knowledge of accounting theory and general administrative and cost principles relating to federal, state and local grants and applying them to a variety of accounting transactions and problems (i.e. reconcile accounts, prepare journal entries, and prepare year-end schedules);
- Excellent team player, poised and mature, with the ability to be flexible and manage multiple priorities and projects and be part of a cross-sectional team;
- Advanced PC skills, especially with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word);
- Experience with Oracle financials is preferred; and
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting or Finance, CPA preferred; at least four (4) years progressively responsible professional experience as an accountant, preferably working in a CPA firm auditing nonprofits in a governmental agency, or ideally in a school system in grant accounting
