Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Development Staff Accountant to support the day-to-day accounting operations of designated real estate development departments and entities. This is a hands-on role with direct involvement in general ledger maintenance, accounts payable processing, financial reporting support, and partnership accounting. The position provides an excellent opportunity to build deep expertise in real estate accounting within a dynamic development environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesDaily Accounting Operations & Support

  • Record and post journal entries for general ledger maintenance across multiple real estate entities
  • Process and code accounts payable invoices, ensuring proper approvals and accurate GL coding
  • Assist with cash management, including bank reconciliations and tracking of disbursements
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of balance sheet reconciliations
  • Process intercompany transactions and assist in resolving intercompany discrepancies
  • Maintain organized and audit-ready accounting records and supporting documentation
  • Assist with accounts receivable tracking, including tenant billings and collections support

Financial Reporting & Controls

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for assigned entities
  • Prepare supporting schedules and workpapers for internal and external reporting
  • Help maintain and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Track and reconcile short-term and long-term liabilities across development partnerships
  • Support external audit and financial review processes by compiling requested documentation
  • Assist with the preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses

Tax Preparation & Partnership Tax Support

  • Assist in the preparation of tax workpapers and supporting schedules for partnership returns
  • Help track partner capital accounts, allocations, and distributions across multi-tier structures
  • Coordinate with tax preparers by gathering and organizing required documentation
  • Support reconciliation of book-to-tax differences under the direction of senior accounting staff
  • Develop working knowledge of partnership taxation concepts applicable to real estate development entities

Development Project Accounting

  • Assist with job costing and tracking of construction-in-progress (CIP) and work-in-progress (WIP) accounts
  • Process and reconcile draw requests, construction loan fundings, and related disbursements
  • Support capitalization of eligible development costs in accordance with company policy and GAAP
  • Maintain project-level cost tracking schedules and assist in budget-to-actual reporting
  • Coordinate with the development team to obtain proper coding and approvals for project costs

Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Work closely with the Controller and senior accounting staff to support departmental goals
  • Partner with development, asset management, and acquisition teams on financial data requests
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives and system enhancements
  • Proactively seek opportunities to expand knowledge of real estate accounting and development finance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA candidate or actively pursuing CPA licensure preferred
  • 1–3 years of accounting experience; real estate or development industry experience a plus
  • Foundational understanding of GAAP and general ledger accounting
  • Familiarity with partnership accounting concepts is a plus
  • Basic understanding of real estate accounting, including job costing, capitalization, and depreciation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP); advanced skills a plus
  • Experience with ERP or real estate accounting systems (e.g., Yardi, MRI, or similar) preferred
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage competing priorities
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset
