ABOUT THE POSITION

Portage College is looking for someone with a background in culinary arts to work in this dual-role position as a lab assistant to the Professional Cook program and frontline cashier in the Grill at the Lac La Biche campus. Some of the responsibilities include:

· Assist professional cook instructors with preparation and equipment organization for cooking classes, including:

· Preparing food (e.g. scaling and measuring foods, chopping vegetables, butchering meat, preparing stocks/sauces)

· Maintaining stock/inventory.

· Ensuring proper food handling and sanitation practices are followed.

· Ensuring efficiency and quality of food preparation.

· Produce and package food for sale in the Grill.

· Perform front line cashier and customer service duties including handling cash, credit and debit purchases/refunds using point of sale system.

· Accountable to balance cash at beginning and/or end of shift.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

· Certificate or diploma in culinary arts. Equivalencies may be considered.

· Experience working in a fast-paced restaurant.

· Experience using point of sales systems.

· Experience handling food and knowledge of proper food handling procedures. Related training in food safety, WHMIS and first aid.

· Excellent customer service skills.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

· Strong skills in organization, multitasking, and telephone etiquette.

· Ability to work flexible schedule to accommodate The Grill hours and program requirements.

· Successful applicant will be required to provide a current police information check
