Job description
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the general supervision of the Power Plant as outlined in the ABSA Boiler Regulations. This position supervises the Power Plant Operators and oversees the safe operation of the steam generator and associated auxiliaries and the Solar Turbine generator.
Key Responsibility Areas:
In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Power Plant Operator, the Chief Engineer performs the following:
Power Plant Operations including:
· Takes all reasonable measures to ensure that the Power Plant conforms to and is operated and maintained in accordance with the Act and Regulations
· Oversees all shift engineers providing direction and support in the operation of the power plant
· Ensures the plant is operated in a safe manner and is maintained in a safe condition. Also implements any changes to improve the operation of the plant.
· Designates a qualified person to act as chief engineer when absent for more than 96 hours.
Administrative Requirements including:
· Ensures proper and accurate record keeping and logs of plant operation, maintenance and plant safety
· Develops Standard Operating Procedures and new policies and procedures as required
· Assists in budget planning and variance reporting
· Prices, P.O.’s, orders and tracks parts and supplies
· Oversee inventory controls
· Completes shift paper work (i.e. timesheets, logs, production reports)
Supervision & Leadership including:
· Plans human resource needs for the area
· Leads and participates in the recruitment, selection, orientation, training & development of employees
· Develops performance plans, evaluates and assists employees in performance improvement including discipline
· Develops and builds effective teams, resolves conflict, mentors and coaches employees.
· Directs, sets priorities and delegates work assignments for employees
· Manages staff scheduling, time off requests, overtime and the direction of work
Training including:
· Identifies and tracks training needs of employee
· Ensures trainees receive practical operating experience when working on their certification
· Trains and coaches new and existing operations employees
Performs other related and assigned duties as required.
Entry Level Qualifications:
Education
Grade 12
2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate or greater or equivalent
Experience
Several years (3 – 5) experience related to the supervision, maintenance and operation of high-pressure steam Boilers and a co-generation unit.
Certification/Licenses:
Current registration with the Alberta Boilers Safety Association
