About Us
We are a New Zealand-based startup building an innovative online chess platform designed to help players improve, learn, and engage with the game in new ways. Our platform combines modern web technologies with advanced chess features and a strong focus on user experience.
We are looking for a motivated junior or graduate web developer who is excited to grow with an early-stage company and contribute to building products used by chess enthusiasts around the world.
Employment Structure
This role will initially be offered as a contract position while the company is in its early stages. As the company grows and funding is secured, there is the potential for this position to transition into a permanent full-time employment role with a higher salary, subject to mutual agreement and business requirements.
We are looking for someone who is excited about joining an early-stage company and growing with us over the long term.
Role Overview
You will work closely with our small remote team to develop and maintain various parts of our chess website, including user-facing features, interactive chess tools, and platform improvements.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career who wants hands-on experience working on a real product from the ground up.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain frontend and backend features for our chess platform.
- Build responsive, modern, and accessible web interfaces.
- Integrate and customize third-party libraries and APIs.
- Implement interactive chess-related features and tools.
- Participate in code reviews and technical discussions.
- Debug, test, and improve existing functionality.
- Collaborate with remote team members across different time zones.
Required Skills
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React.
- Basic understanding of backend development using Node.js and REST APIs.
- Familiarity with Git and collaborative development workflows.
- Understanding of responsive design principles.
- Good problem-solving abilities and willingness to learn.
Nice to Have
- Experience with TypeScript.
- Familiarity with chess libraries such as chess.js, Stockfish, or similar tools.
- Experience working with WebSockets or real-time applications.
- Knowledge of UI/UX best practices.
- Interest in chess, gaming, or educational platforms.
Equipment Requirements
Ideally, applicants should have access to their own laptop or desktop suitable for software development. However, if this presents a genuine barrier, we are happy to discuss potential options on a case-by-case basis.
