To be eligible for Canada Summer Jobs, participant must:

be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of their summer job

be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the job and

be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

This includes having a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of their summer job

Overview

The Event Coordinator will play a key role in designing and delivering family-centered activities and community events that support newcomer integration in the Central Okanagan. This position will help plan and coordinate summer camps, family workshops, cultural celebrations, and community-building events that connect immigrant families with Canadian culture, local resources, and one another. The ideal candidate is passionate about community engagement, enjoys working with diverse families, and is committed to creating welcoming, inclusive spaces where newcomers can learn, connect, and belong.

This position will primarily operate during the summer program period, with potential for involvement in future seasonal camps and community events as funding allows.

Key Responsibilities

1. Event & Program Planning

  • Assist in planning and coordinating family-focused events, summer camp activities, workshops, cultural celebrations and community gatherings.
  • Support the design of age-appropriate and family-friendly activities that help children and parents learn about Canadian culture, school systems, and community life.
  • Coordinate logistics, including schedules, registration, materials, snacks, and basic set-up/tear-down for events and camps.

2. Community Engagement & Inclusion

  • Welcome and engage immigrants and newcomers from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds in all events and activities.
  • Help create a safe, inclusive, and friendly environment that encourages newcomer families to participate, ask questions, and build connections.
  • Support outreach to immigrant and equity-deserving families through community partners, social media, and word-of-mouth.

3. Partnership & Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with OCCA staff, volunteers, and community partners to deliver events and summer programming.
  • Help maintain relationships with multicultural, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQI+, and other equity-deserving community groups to support inclusive outreach and participation.

4. Promotion & Communications

  • Assist with creating basic promotional materials (e.g., posters, social media posts, email content) to advertise events and camps.
  • Share clear information with families about schedules, activities, and expectations in a welcoming and accessible way.
  • Represent the program in a professional and respectful manner at community events and activities.

5. Program Support & Reporting

  • Help with event registration, attendance tracking, and basic record-keeping.
  • Assist in gathering feedback from participants and families to improve future programs.
  • Provide brief summaries or reports on activities, participation, and outcomes as needed by the Program Manager/Director or funders.

Qualifications

  • Interest in and/or experience with event planning, youth programs, camps, or community activities.
  • Passion for supporting immigrant, refugee, and equity-deserving families and promoting inclusion.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with children, parents, and community partners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and also take initiative when needed.
  • Good organization and time management skills, including handling multiple tasks in a busy program environment.
  • Cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse backgrounds, languages, and experiences.
  • Fluency in additional languages (especially those spoken by newcomer communities) is an asset.
  • Previous experience in community engagement, multicultural programming, or settlement-related

Pay: $17.85-$18.25 per hour
