Freelance Technical Interior Designer / Interior Design Technologist

New Mode Home is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Freelance Interior Design Technologist / Technical Designer to support a high-end residential condo renovation and furnishing project located in Dallas, Texas.

This position is ideal for someone based in Toronto with strong technical drafting abilities, experience in residential interiors, and the ability to translate design direction into clear, accurate, contractor-facing drawing packages.

The successful candidate will support the design process by preparing detailed 2D drawings, interior elevations, finish plans, millwork/cabinetry details, and design-intent documentation for contractor pricing, coordination, and execution. This is a freelance, project-based role with the potential for ongoing collaboration.

We are looking for a highly organized, self-motivated individual with strong technical judgement, excellent attention to detail, and experience working on residential renovation projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Design & Technical Drawings

• Prepare detailed 2D drawings, including floor plans, furniture plans, finish plans, interior elevations, sections, millwork details, cabinetry drawings, and reflected ceiling/lighting coordination drawings.
• Translate design direction, sketches, markups, inspiration images, and as-built information into accurate design-intent drawings.
• Develop drawing packages suitable for contractor pricing, trade coordination, and project execution.
• Review existing plans, PDFs, CAD files, and site measurement packages to identify missing dimensions, inconsistencies, and technical questions.
• Dimension key interior elements, including cabinetry, islands, countertops, backsplash areas, built-ins, fireplace walls, wine bar areas, lighting locations, and furniture layouts.
• Revise drawings based on design updates, client feedback, consultant input, and project requirements.
• Assist in developing clear drawing notes, schedules, legends, and detail callouts.
• Maintain drawing accuracy, consistency, and organization across all project files.

Residential Renovation Documentation

• Support documentation for a cosmetic residential condo renovation, including kitchen updates, wine bar/fireplace wall updates, foyer, dining room, breakfast area, connecting hallways, lighting, finishes, furniture, and décor.
• Prepare interior elevations and details for areas such as cabinetry, stone, tile, millwork, lighting, hardware, and built-ins.
• Coordinate drawings around existing site conditions and condo constraints.
• Flag potential technical issues, code concerns, constructability questions, or missing information for review by the designer, contractor, architect, or engineer.
• Understand the difference between design-intent drawings and permit/construction documents.
• Support clear handoff to the general contractor and trades.

Material, Finish & Specification Support

• Assist in preparing finish schedules, fixture schedules, hardware schedules, lighting schedules, and specification documents.
• Organize selections for tile, countertops, stone, plumbing fixtures, lighting, hardware, appliances, flooring, paint, wallcovering, furniture, and décor.
• Research product dimensions, installation requirements, technical specifications, lead times, and compatibility as needed.
• Coordinate product information into drawings and schedules.
• Maintain organized project documentation for selections, approvals, outstanding items, and revisions.

Project Coordination & Organization

• Maintain organized CAD files, drawing folders, schedules, specification sheets, and project documentation.
• Track outstanding dimensions, technical questions, drawing revisions, and required approvals.
• Coordinate remotely with the lead designer and, where required, contractors, vendors, fabricators, and consultants.
• Attend virtual project check-ins as needed.
• Work independently and proactively while maintaining clear communication.
• Meet agreed project deadlines and manage workload efficiently.

Client Presentation Support

• Assist with client-facing drawing packages, design presentations, finish packages, and visual documentation.
• Ensure all technical materials are accurate, organized, and visually polished.
• Support presentation drawings that help the client understand layout, scale, finish direction, and design intent.
• Diploma or degree in Interior Design, Interior Design Technology, Architectural Technology, Architectural Design, or a related field.
• 3-5+ years of experience in residential interior design documentation, technical drafting, architectural interiors, or a related field.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating residential floor plans, interior elevations, millwork drawings, cabinetry details, finish plans, reflected ceiling plans, and technical drawing packages.
• Experience working on custom residential, luxury residential, condo renovation, or high-end interiors projects.
• Strong understanding of residential design, renovation sequencing, construction detailing, millwork, cabinetry, lighting coordination, finishes, and trade documentation.
• Familiarity with U.S. residential renovation standards, IRC/IBC/NEC awareness, or experience supporting U.S.-based projects is strongly preferred.
• NCIDQ, ARIDO, IDC, or related professional affiliation is considered an asset.
• Experience working with contractors, millworkers, electricians, stone fabricators, plumbers, and other residential trades is considered an asset.

Required Software Skills

• Strong proficiency in AutoCAD.
• Working knowledge of Revit, SketchUp, or similar 3D modelling software.
• Strong skills in Photoshop or Canva
• Proficiency with the Google Workspace
• Experience with using AI software like ChatGPT, Nano Banana, or ArchSynth is an asset but not required.

Ideal Candidate

• Strong technical drafting skills with a refined eye for interior design.
• Able to work from as-builts, PDFs, CAD files, site measurements, markups, sketches, and design direction.
• Comfortable identifying missing information and asking clear technical questions.
• Detail-oriented and committed to producing clean, accurate, high-quality drawings.
• Strong understanding of residential interiors, materials, finishes, cabinetry, millwork, lighting, and construction coordination.

• Highly organized and able to manage multiple deadlines.
• Clear communicator with strong follow-through.
• Comfortable working remotely with a Toronto-based designer on an out-of-province U.S. project.
• Professional, collaborative, and solution-oriented.
