Job description
About Neuralink:
We are creating devices that enable a bi-directional interface with the brain. These devices allow us to restore movement to the paralyzed, restore sight to the blind, and revolutionize how humans interact with their digital world.
Team Description:
At Neuralink, safety isn't a checkpoint, it's what lets us move fast without breaking the people who build the future. The Safety Team is the tactical extension of our engineers and scientists, embedding directly into high-stakes labs and facilities to eliminate hazards before they slow anyone down. We own the programs that protect our people, visitors, and contractors, and we run them at the pace the mission demands. We're looking for a high-speed, high-ownership individual who runs toward problems, thrives in ambiguity, and wants their work to directly enable Neuralink's mission of building a brain interface that restores autonomy and unlock human potential.
Job Description and Responsibilities:
As an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist / Engineer at Neuralink, you will support and help drive the day-to-day functions of the Safety Team across our two California locations — South San Francisco and Fremont — as well as other functions throughout the company. This is a role for a highly motivated person who has deliberately chosen EHS as their career, or an experienced technical lead ready to own and manage multiple EHS programs across both sites. You will continuously maintain facility permits and registrations to comply with local, state, and federal regulations while improving existing safety programs, training, processes, and operations.
We are looking for a well-rounded, mechanically-inclined team member who takes ownership, works independently across sites, and enjoys unique projects that push them outside their comfort zone. You will regularly split your time between the South San Francisco and Fremont facilities and be trusted to prioritize and advance programs at both. Additionally, you will be expected to:
- Manage and coordinate EHS programs across both the South San Francisco and Fremont sites, adapting priorities to each location's needs
- Support regulatory compliance across both the South San Francisco and Fremont sites — maintaining facility permits, registrations, and reporting obligations with local, state, and federal agencies (e.g., CUPA, air district, RCRA, DTSC), and coordinate/lead inspections and audits
- Manage the day-to-day hazardous waste lifecycle at both sites — identification, labeling, accumulation, storage, manifesting, and disposal
- Administer stormwater, industrial wastewater, SPCC, and soil management programs, and prepare the associated discharge and compliance reports on schedule
- Track changing environmental and safety regulations across two sites and, with guidance and oversight from the EHS Lead, translate new requirements into site-specific programs and corrective actions
- Collaborate with engineers and scientists to ensure their processes are safe, and review new and existing chemicals
Required Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience within a health and safety role
- 3+ years of experience handling, storing, safekeeping, and removing hazardous materials (e.g., acids, bases, solvents)
- Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory agencies and requirements (e.g., stormwater, hazardous waste, industrial wastewater, spill prevention, control, countermeasure (SPCC), and soil management)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- EHS Certifications such as ASP: Associate Safety Professional, CSP: Certified Safety Professional, and CIH: Certified Industrial Hygienist
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or Environmental-related discipline or equivalent industry experience
- Prior experience in building facilities (e.g., HVAC, DI water, CDA, Nitrogen, Vacuum, exhaust) and wastewater treatment (AWN)
- Previous experience preparing hazardous waste, stormwater, and wastewater discharge reports
- Familiarity with setting up EHS programs and training such as LOTO, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Equipment Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Ergonomics, etc.
- Technical background knowledge of chemical interactions and handling
- Prior experience analyzing, developing, and implementing corrective actions to ensure safe working environments
- Knowledge of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and GLP (Good Laboratory Practices)
Additional Requirements and Competencies:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to stand and walk for 10+ hours daily
- Ability to climb stairs
Expected Compensation:
The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the following range.
