Job description

Role Purpose:

The Patent Specialist resides within the Intellectual Property (IP) Innovation, Technology, and Policy team and supports NBCUniversal’s global patent program. Working closely with the team’s lawyers and administrative staff, the Patent Specialist will coordinate patent filings and inventor-related processes, maintain patent and document management systems, track deadlines and costs, and help improve operational workflows across the global patent program.

Responsibilities:

  • Support invention evaluation processes by tracking metrics and organizing documentation
  • Collect and manage inventor information, coordinate national phase instruction letters, and support inventor filing and patent awards
  • Consistently maintain patent and document management systems
  • Process invoices and support patent cost-tracking initiatives
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and collaboration within the team’s practice, including designing and implementing tools to automate and track transactional processes
  • Proactively develop and maintain policies, procedures, forms, and best practices to support process improvements and drive consistency
  • Contribute to special projects and perform other duties as assigned

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of relevant experience in a professional role requiring organizational skills and careful attention to detail, preferably either at a law firm or comparable corporate setting
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and workload management skills with keen attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-directed; able to work independently and collaboratively

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in patent prosecution or familiarity with domestic and international patent processes
  • Experience with IP docketing and patent management systems, including Computer Packages, Inc.
  • Positive, adaptable, and proactive approach in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated experience using AI tools and an interest in developing ways to deploy these tools to improve our practices

Hybrid: This position currently has a hybrid schedule, which requires contributing from the Universal City, CA office a minimum of four days per week. The Company reserves the right to change in-office requirements at any time.

Salary Range: $65,000 - $85,000
