Job Summary
The Interior Design Program of the Department of Design and Planning (DDP) in the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) at Morgan State University invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track or tenured associate professor, who will also serve as the Interior Design program director. The position is a 9.5‑month appointment (effective August 2025) with the opportunity to earn an additional one‑month stipend to administer the program during the summer. We seek a dynamic and collaborative educator ready to lead a growing program in an interdisciplinary environment and join SA+P’s community of faculty, staff and students in fulfilling the mission and advancing the strategic goals of the school and university.

Established in 2018, the Interior Design program is growing in size and stature, with current enrollment over 90 majors, and faculty that include three full‑time and several part‑time interior design and architecture professors teaching the program’s courses. It is the only program in Maryland offering a 4‑year professional degree in interior design.
The Bachelor of Science in Interior Design (INTD) is an undergraduate design degree that aims to improve the quality of life of people and their communities through the design of healthy, safe, and environmentally sound interior spaces. The program of study prepares students to be professional interior designers who have the passion, knowledge, and skills to identify and analyze problems through research and to develop and apply creative solutions for issues and functions related to interior environments.
Job Duties
In addition to serving as the program director for INTD, the responsibilities of this position include teaching interior design courses and building scholarly research program and service agendas. The ability to teach courses and contribute to the academic discourse of other SA+P disciplines and degree programs, including the BS in Architecture and Environmental Design, is greatly preferred. Along with these teaching and leadership responsibilities, the candidate will build and maintain a research agenda appropriate for a tenure‑track or tenured faculty line and be expected to publish their work in quality peer‑reviewed scholarly journals and books, engage in external grant activity to support their scholarship, and carry out impactful creative work relevant to the field and the mission of the school. This faculty hire is also expected to contribute their service to support the program, department, school, and university and engage in activities that support the profession. They will also be expected to work with program/department/school faculty and stakeholders to further key strategic goals and initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
Primary administrative and leadership responsibilities include administering the INTD curriculum, determining teaching assignments for program faculty, recruitment, advising students within the major, conducting student learning outcomes assessments, guiding the program’s accreditation effort and maintenance, serving as a liaison to the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and other professional and academic bodies related to the field, representing the program in SA+P’s leadership team and university administrative bodies, program promotion and fundraising, and maintaining robust relationships with the local and national professional worlds. As program director, this faculty will work closely with and under the supervision of the DDP chair and may be assigned other duties by the chair or dean of the school.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- A terminal degree from an accredited Interior Design program or closely‑aligned professional field (MS, MFA, MARCH). A PhD is a plus.
- Professional licensure/certification (NCIDQ) or ability to attain professional certification within three years of employment.
- Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, research, and university service.
- A minimum of two years working in an academic or professional leadership capacity and five years in relevant interior design, architectural or related design practice.
- A well‑documented record of academic and professional leadership, including prior administrative experience and the ability to manage teams, build consensus and resolve conflicts expediently.
- Experience with the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) process.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the demonstrated ability to work with colleagues in a collaborative environment and with a diverse student body.
- Evidence of experience in curriculum development and program enhancement.
Other Preferences for Consideration
- A PhD degree in Interior Design or Architecture, Urban Planning or other SA+P discipline.
- The ability to contribute to the instruction of at least one other SA+P discipline in addition to interior design.
- Demonstrated ability to pursue and win external funding.
- Demonstrated ability to lead transdisciplinary projects.
- A record of peer‑reviewed publication in top‑tier journals.
