Job description
In the days after the 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed most of San Francisco, the city's banks stayed shut, their vaults too hot to open for weeks. Amadeo Giannini, who ran the small Bank of Italy, did the opposite. He set up a makeshift desk on the wharf, a plank laid across two barrels, and began lending. Most of his customers were shopkeepers, fishermen, and tradespeople who had lost everything, including any papers proving who they were. So Giannini lent on a signature and a handshake, betting on the people in front of him. Those loans helped rebuild the city block by block, and, the story goes, every one of them was paid back.
That's the promise of a business loan: capital, offered fairly and fast, to people with the will and the plan to build something. More than a century later, too many growing businesses still hit a version of the closed vault: slow processes, opaque decisions, and paperwork that arrives too late to matter.
At Mercury, we're building lending products that give growing businesses fast, fair, transparent access to the capital that lets them say yes when it counts. We're looking for a Senior PM to own this product end-to-end. You'll blend sharp product instincts with real empathy for business owners, partnering closely with risk, design, data science, engineering, and operations to ship a product that is both responsible and genuinely delightful to use.
*Mercury is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC.
What You'll Do:
- Own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for Mercury's business lending product suite
- Drive the end-to-end customer journey — eligibility and discovery, application, underwriting and decisioning, funding, servicing, and repayment
- Partner with risk and data science to design underwriting and decisioning experiences that balance speed and approval rates with sound credit and compliance controls
- Work with design and engineering to make the application feel effortless, transparent, and trustworthy for business owners
- Collaborate with banking partners, legal, and compliance to ensure the product is regulatory-compliant and operationally sound
- Define and instrument the metrics that matter: conversion, approval and decline rates, time-to-funding, loss performance, repayment health, and customer satisfaction — and use them to prioritize
- Use customer insight, market research, and data to decide what to build next, and make crisp tradeoffs between scope, risk, and speed
- Partner with marketing, sales, and support to launch the product and bring it to the right customers at the right moment
What You Bring:
- 7+ years of product management or aligned experience, with at least 2+ years in lending, credit, payments, or another regulated financial domain
- Experience of building and scaling lending businesses
- A strong grasp of the lending lifecycle: origination, underwriting, servicing, and repayment , and the risk and compliance considerations that come with it
- Proven ability to ship AI-first and iterate on customer-facing products that solve real problems for users
- Technical fluency: comfort partnering deeply with engineers and data scientists while translating complexity for business, risk, and compliance stakeholders
- Strong customer empathy paired with the rigor to balance growth against credit, compliance, and operational realities
- A track record of using data and experimentation to drive decisions and measurable outcomes
- Comfort operating with ambiguity and setting direction in a fast-moving, greenfield product area
