Summary
MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking an Aquatic Scientist on behalf of a leading environmental consulting organization. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced aquatic scientist who enjoys leading field programs, contributing to multidisciplinary environmental projects, and mentoring junior professionals.
Working alongside a collaborative team of environmental specialists, you'll support fisheries and aquatic assessments across Canada, helping clients navigate regulatory requirements while contributing to projects that protect and enhance aquatic ecosystems. This role offers a strong balance of field work, technical reporting, and career development in a supportive team environment.
- Location: Whitehorse, YT (Hybrid)
Responsibilities
- Lead and support fisheries and aquatic assessment projects and field programs across Canada.
- Plan and execute aquatic field programs involving fish, fish habitat, water quality, sediment, and benthic invertebrate sampling.
- Conduct fish habitat assessments, fish community characterization, and fish health evaluations.
- Design and implement baseline environmental monitoring programs.
- Analyze scientific data and prepare high-quality technical reports and regulatory documentation.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams, clients, Indigenous communities, regulators, and project stakeholders.
- Mentor junior scientists and support technical development within the aquatic sciences team.
- Contribute to technical proposals, project planning, and scientific reviews.
- Represent the organization through technical presentations, industry engagement, and professional conferences.
- Travel to remote and northern project sites as required.
Qualifications - Must-Haves
- Advanced degree in Biology, Aquatic Sciences, Fisheries, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- Registered Professional Biologist (R.P.Bio.) or equivalent professional designation, or eligibility for registration.
- Minimum 6 years of experience in fisheries and aquatic science.
- Experience conducting fish collection, fish community assessments, and fish health evaluations.
- Strong knowledge of freshwater aquatic ecosystems, fish habitat assessments, and statistical analysis.
- Experience designing and implementing baseline environmental monitoring programs.
- Strong technical writing, analytical, and report preparation skills.
- Experience planning and leading aquatic field programs.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills.
- Ability and willingness to travel to remote project locations and work in varying field conditions.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience supporting mining or natural resource projects.
- Experience with Fisheries Act Authorizations and fish habitat assessments.
- Experience collecting and analyzing water, sediment, and benthic invertebrate data.
- Knowledge of QA/QC procedures and environmental data management.
- Experience operating boats and outboard motors during field programs.
- Previous experience mentoring junior staff and working within multidisciplinary consulting teams.
