Associate Project Controls Specialist/Project Controls Specialist 

 

OVERVIEW 

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL is seeking a Project Controls Specialist to work on the Project Controls team. The Project Controls Specialist will be responsible for providing cost engineering services for projects being managed within the Engineering and Maintenance Departments. The candidate is an active project team member providing key input and analysis to project management to facilitate timely decision making. The candidate shall manage changes to the project forecast and budget, and constantly interface with Engineering, Maintenance, Accounting, and Project Team personnel. 

 

Relocation is approved for this position. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assists in creating and updating project schedules under the guidance of senior staff. Input schedule data and support progress updates. Identifies basic scheduling issues and reports them to project leads. 

  • Monitors actual costs and commitments against the approved budget. Prepares routine cost reports and assist with cost variance analysis. Supports monthly cost forecasting and budgeting exercises. 

  • Collects progress, cost, and schedule data from project teams and contractors. Generates standard reports, charts, and dashboards for internal and external use.  

  • Ensures consistency and accuracy of project control data across tools and platforms. 

  • Assists in calculating earned value metrics (CPI, SPI, etc.). Monitors and reports project performance indicators under supervision. Highlights trends and performance issues for further analysis by senior staff. 

  • Tracks project changes and help assess their impact on cost and schedule. Maintains change logs and support documentation for change requests. 

  • Uses project control systems and tools to input, extract, and manipulate data. Ensures data accuracy in control systems. 

  • Coordinates with planners, cost engineers, and project managers to ensure alignment of data and reporting.  

  • Participates in team meetings and provide project controls input as needed. 

  • Follows established project controls procedures and guidelines. Supports audits and internal reviews by maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation 

Additional Responsibilities 

  • Supports planning for future budget submittals with Engineering/Maintenance/Budget Coordinator 

  • Participates in turnaround project controls support. 

  • Monitoring actual costs against the budget, along with key metrics such as labor rates, indirect ratio, material, equipment, and operations cost.  

  • Ensure accurate and timeliness of cost reporting. This should include reviewing execution data to ensure forecasts reflect accurate and future execution strategies.  

  • Ensure compliance with Marathon applicable standards and best practices. 

 

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

 

Minimum (Required) Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Three (3) years or more refining/petrochemical industry experience, or zero (0) years or more of experience with a Bachelor’s Degree. 

  • Valid driver’s license required 

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or similar field. 

  • Five (5)+ years heavy industrial, refining, or petrochemical project controls/management experience, or three (3) years or more of experience with a bachelor’s degree 

 

SKILLS 

  • Excellent communication, organization & planning skills 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products-Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS 

This position works a 4/10 schedule (10-hour days, Monday-Thursday). Availability for callouts and weekend work required in support of refinery needs. Potential for travel up to 15%
