Job Description
Make is the leading visual platform for anyone to design, build, and automate anything—from tasks and workflows to apps and systems—without the need for coding skills. We are headquartered in the flourishing tech hub of Prague, Czech Republic, and our teams are spread across the USA, UK, Germany, France, Canada, India and Chile, among other locations.
Why do we love building Make (and why you might, too)?
We’re a team of developers, and it’s second nature for us to whip up a solution with some coding. But what about folks who aren’t developers or don’t have one in their corner? They could get trapped in a monotonous cycle of tedious tasks, shuffling data around, and missing out on doing things that really matter.
That’s where Make comes in. We’ve created a space where anyone can craft powerful automations that are as intuitive and fun as playing a game. We’re here to share the buzz of creating something awesome that works like a charm and to turn everyday individuals into makers.
The Role:
As the Tech Lead for Make’s Scenario Designer, you will take ownership of the technical vision for the heart of our user experience. The Designer is our proprietary visual canvas—a playful, game-like environment where customers build their automations. It is our single most important differentiator and the key to our product's magic.
While beloved, our current Designer is built on a technology that limits our ability to innovate and deliver the world-class user experience our customers deserve. Your mission is to lead the fundamental modernization of this component. You will re-imagine its architecture to unlock new levels of interactivity, performance, and delight, directly addressing one of our company's most significant challenges: improving UX. Your mission is to evolve the Designer so other teams can build confidently on top of it.
You won’t be doing performance reviews or HR stuff (we’ve got an EM for that 👋), but you will be the technical authority — setting direction, shaping architecture, and driving priorities in collaboration with stakeholders across product and engineering.
Why this role is cool:
- You get technical ownership without people-management overhead.
- The work has a wide organizational impact — you’re literally shaping how other teams build.
- Lots of freedom to introduce best practices, improve CI/CD, and evolve the stack.
What you’ll be doing:
Imagine you are the master architect tasked with redesigning the central square of a vibrant city. The foundation is historic, but it's time to build a future-proof marvel in its place. If this kind of foundational, high-impact work excites you, we should talk.
Specifically, you will:
- Lead the architectural redesign of the Scenario Designer, moving to a modern, performant rendering engine.
- Drive refactoring, modernization, and tooling efforts to improve reliability, developer experience, and performance.
- Write high-performance, low-level TypeScript, working directly with the canvas (or libraries such as three.js).
- Prioritize the technical roadmap for the modernization effort, making critical trade-offs to deliver value iteratively.
- Make architectural decisions and review critical PRs.
- Obsess over performance and UX, ensuring the designer is smooth and responsive even with thousands of elements.
- Mentor engineers within the team, elevating their skills in advanced frontend development.
- Represent the team in cross-functional discussions — being the go-to person for Scenario Builder platform topics.
What we expect from you:
You are a seasoned frontend engineer with a deep passion for user interfaces and a specialist's command of browser technologies. You have a portfolio of complex, interactive projects that showcase your craft.
Your technical expertise includes:
- Deep, authoritative knowledge of vanilla JavaScript and browser rendering.
- Demonstrable experience building applications without relying on mainstream frameworks like React, Vue, or An
