Why You’ll Love This Role The transport Process Engineering group is looking for a candidate to fulfill the role of Manufacturing Process Development Engineer/Scientist. The products we manufacture are part of virtually every type of telecom, enterprise, and data center network. The processing expertise gained by our team over 20 years is progressing into the next-generation technologies.

The successful candidate will be directly involved in process design cycle from conceptual design, a first build prototype in our lab, device characterization using both manual and automated equipment, to high-volume production by one of our contract manufacturers. The position resides in Ottawa Telecom Transport Business Unit, but frequent business travel to Asia is expected.

If you have a passion for learning and solving problems as well as an educational background that includes materials science, physics, engineering, programming or directly related disciplines; as well as hands‑on experience in assembly processes and equipment setup; this role could be just what you seek.

What You’ll Be Doing Be the process owner for manufacturing processes used to assemble high‑precision optical products, including preliminary wire bonding.

Specify the design and lead the assembly of tools and jigs.

Assist with developing improved tooling and tool support strategies for automated and manual manufacturing.

Perform failure analysis and implement corrective actions.

Sustain processes with emphasis on statistical process control, maintain yields and improve yields to targets.

Improve manufacturability and defect reduction for different process areas of the fab by working closely with various process engineers.

Contribute to the transfer of new products to manufacturing sites and subsequent cost reductions.

Work within a cleanroom environment with the prerequisite use of cleanroom clothing.

Analyze tool and process data with continuous improvement based on SPC and 6‑sigma principles.

Design, develop and integrate robotics to different areas of Mfg. Process including but not limited to advanced packaging, automated epoxy application, soldering, and pick‑and‑place processes.

Prepare and review technical documentation of procedures, publish results and provide training to technicians.

Conduct experiments, including Design of Experiments (DOE), to evaluate the sensitivity of products and/or processes to different variables.

This role involves a variety of hands‑on and desk work (roughly 50‑50 in the lab and at your desk).

What We’re Looking For Education Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Engineering Science, Robotic Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or other relevant engineering or physical science discipline is required; PhD degree is an asset.

Experience Experience working in a laboratory or manufacturing environment is necessary.

Familiarity with component assemblies such as wire bonding, soldering, epoxy application, machining, designing tools to assist with the prototyping.

Ability to work effectively with design engineers, manufacturing and external vendors to solve issues with optical components.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ability to travel internationally.

Skills Self‑motivated worker thrives without close management.

The ideal candidate is someone who has a general curiosity towards material things. Someone who enjoys tinkering, working with their hands, and critically thinking about the physical world.

Familiarity with optoelectronic development from conceptual design, vendor interaction, package prototyping, testing, and performance characterization to NPI/volume production.

Familiarity in working with Contract Manufacturers (CM) and knowledge of assembly/test equipment capabilities (particularly in Asia), experience with automated assembly and test equipment.

Experience with Python.

Experience with CAD software (SolidEdge, SolidWorks, or equivalent).

Familiar with Lab/manufacturing tools an asset: Wire bonder, microscopes, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), profilometers, 3d printers, etc.

Experience with basic machine shop tools is an asset (drill press, mill, etc).

Salary Range $84,650 - $114,550 CAD (flexible).
