POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Science is a strategic instructional leader responsible for strengthening science teaching and learning across Legends Charter School. This leader ensures rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum implementation, delivers high-impact professional learning, and builds systems that use data to drive measurable gains in student achievement.

The Director of Science will be deeply familiar with and able to support high-fidelity implementation of STEMscopes K-8 curriculum, inquiry-based science instruction, and schoolwide data analysis practices. The role requires strong expertise in curriculum design, adult learning, formative assessment, and instructional coaching.

This position sits within the Office of Curriculum and Instruction, which spans four core competency areas:

  • Curriculum
  • Professional Learning
  • Enrichment and Intervention
  • Formative Assessment

The Director of Science will support school-based staff in implementing Legends' existing academic programs while simultaneously strengthening science programming, instructional resources, and educator professional development systems. This leader will also oversee the implementation of OWL (Ongoing Work-Based Learning), Legends embedded professional development model.

In partnership with school leadership, the Director of Science will advance STEM integration, real-world learning, and cross-curricular connections, while building relationships with industry partners, higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, and governmental agencies to expand opportunities for scholars

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Lead the development, refinement, and implementation of a rigorous, standards-aligned K-8 science curriculum aligned to state standards and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) where applicable.
  • Ensure high-fidelity implementation of the STEMscopes K-8 curriculum across all grade levels.
  • Establish clear instructional frameworks that emphasize inquiry-based learning, scientific reasoning, experimentation, and real-world problem solving.
  • Support vertical alignment across grade levels to ensure coherence and progression of scientific knowledge and skills.
  • Promote integration of science with technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Data & Assessment

  • Lead the analysis and use of formative, interim, and summative science assessment data to monitor student growth and mastery.
  • Develop structured data cycles that support teachers and leaders in making instructional adjustments.
  • Identify trends, achievement gaps, and priority standards requiring targeted support.
  • Present clear, actionable data reports to senior leadership and key stakeholder groups.

Professional Learning & Coaching

  • Design and deliver high-impact professional development aligned to adult learning theory and research-based science instructional practices.
  • Provide coaching, modeling, co-planning, and co-teaching support to strengthen classroom instruction.
  • Facilitate train-the-trainer models to build internal instructional capacity.
  • Assess teacher and leader needs, including dual language and extended year programs, and develop targeted professional learning plans.
  • Oversee implementation of OWL (Ongoing Work-Based Learning) as Legends' school-based professional development model.

Enrichment & Intervention

  • Develop systems for science intervention to support scholars who require additional academic support.
  • Expand enrichment opportunities such as STEM clubs, science fairs, research projects, robotics, and project-based learning experiences.
  • Ensure enrichment and intervention efforts are aligned to core curriculum and informed by data.

Leadership & Strategic Planning

  • Develop detailed implementation plans and timelines for science initiatives and monitor progress toward goals.
  • Anticipate, identify, and resolve challenges that may impede instructional success.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with principals, instructional leaders, and teachers to ensure alignment and accountability.
  • Engage and manage partnerships with external STEM organizations and institutions to enhance student learning opportunities.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and evaluation of science instructional staff as needed.
