The Specialist/Lead for Backfilling and Paste Filling is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the complete lifecycle of paste backfill and hydraulic filling operations. The primary focus is to ensure structural stability (strata control), minimize surface subsidence, prevent spontaneous combustion in goaf areas, and maximize coal recovery safely in compliance with DGMS regulations.
Responsibilities
1. Technical Design & Optimization
- Mix Design: Develop, test, and optimize paste/hydraulic fill mix designs using industrial waste like fly ash, bottom ash, mill tailings, or crushed overburden combined with cement/binders and water.
- Rheology & Flow: Analyze the rheological (flow) properties of the paste to prevent pipeline blockages and ensure smooth gravity or pumped reticulation (distribution) from the surface to underground voids.
- Geotechnical Compliance: Ensure the cured paste meets the required Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) targets to support overlying strata and safely allow adjacent coal extraction.
2. Plant Operations & Reticulation Management
- Surface Plant Management: Oversee the operations of the surface paste mixing plant, including silos, weigh-batchers, mixers, and high-pressure positive displacement pumps.
- Pipeline Infrastructure: Design, monitor, and maintain the underground borehole and pipeline distribution network. Implement wear-monitoring protocols to prevent pipeline bursts or vacuum collapses.
- Barricade Design: Oversee the construction and monitoring of underground retaining walls (bulkheads/barricades) to safely contain the wet paste within the designated void until it cures.
3. Regulatory, Safety & Environmental Compliance
- DGMS Statutory Compliance: Ensure all backfilling operations strictly adhere to the Coal Mines Regulations (CMR) and specific DGMS permissions related to depillaring with stowing/filling.
- Strata Monitoring: Collaborate with the ventilation and geomechanics teams to monitor pressure buildup behind bulkheads and trace any ground movement or subsidence.
- Environmental Management: Maximize the utilization of fly ash (in line with Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change guidelines) while managing underground water drainage and decantation efficiently.
Education & Certification
Degree: B.E. / B.Tech in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mitigation/Materials Engineering from a recognized institute.
Statutory Certifications (Preferred): First Class or Second Class Manager’s Certificate of Competency (Coal) under CMR is highly advantageous.
Experience & Expertise
- Experience: 5 to 10+ years of hands-on experience in underground mining operations, with a minimum of 3 years specifically dedicated to paste filling, hydraulic stowing, or backfilling systems.
- Industry Context: Deep understanding of coal mining conditions (e.g., Board and Pillar depillaring, Longwall, or thick seam mining).
