Job Description

Job Type: Full-time | Location: Vancouver | Department: Operations | Reporting to: Associate Director, Operations | Work Location Type: #hybrid

IREN is a leading AI Cloud Service Provider, delivering large-scale GPU clusters for AI training and inference. IREN’s vertically integrated platform is underpinned by its expansive portfolio of grid-connected land and data centers in renewable-rich regions across the U.S. and Canada.

With 100% renewable energy, we build, own and operate our data centers and take pride in being at the forefront of sustainable solutions for the ever-evolving applications of high-performance compute. We believe that human progress is invaluable, but it should be done in the right way – responsibly, sustainably and having a positive impact on the communities we operate in.

The Senior Data Platform Engineer will play a key role in designing, building, and operating a scalable data platform that supports the reliable collection, transformation, and storage of operational data. This role spans both pipeline development and underlying data infrastructure, ensuring systems are performant, resilient, and scalable across distributed environments.

The successful candidate will manage and optimize data workflows, databases, and monitoring systems to enable high-quality, dependable data for operational and business decision-making. This role bridges engineering and operations, ensuring data systems remain efficient, observable, and production-ready at scale.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or a Data / Business Analytics
  • 8+ years of experience in Data Engineering, with strong exposure to data platform ownership and distributed systems.
  • Proven experience building or operating distributed databases such as ClickHouse, Cassandra, Druid, Pinot, or BigQuery (preference for non-SaaS / self-managed environments).
  • Proven experience with self-hosted big data ecosystems (e.g., Hadoop, Spark).
  • Strong knowledge of data storage formats (e.g., Parquet, ORC) and modern table formats (e.g., Hudi, Iceberg, Delta Lake).
  • Strong knowledge of data partitioning, replication, and distributed system design, including query performance tuning at scale across large datasets.
  • Experience working in on-premises, hybrid infrastructure environments or bare metal clusters.
  • Experience designing and maintaining scalable ETL/ELT pipelines, including workflow orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-availability environment.
  • Ability to problem-solve around complex, large-scale systems.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate a scalable data platform, including pipelines, storage systems, and compute layers.
  • Architect and maintain distributed data systems for high-throughput ingestion and low-latency querying.
  • Build and optimize ETL/ELT workflows using Apache Airflow, including authoring and maintaining Python-based DAGs.
  • Develop and manage data integrations across internal and external systems in on-prem, hybrid, and cloud environments.
  • Operate and optimize bare metal clusters and self-hosted data ecosystems (e.g., Hadoop/Spark).
  • Maintain and scale data warehouses and analytical databases (e.g., ClickHouse, Postgres, InfluxDB).
  • Implement robust partitioning, replication, and clustering strategies for large-scale datasets.
  • Optimize query performance at scale, including indexing strategies, data modeling, and execution tuning.
  • Work closely with operations and engineering teams to deliver high-quality, reliable datasets.
  • Document data architecture, workflows, and platform components for long-term maintainability.
