About us
The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School, which plays a criticalrole in the COVID-19 pandemic response, went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With $64 million in research funding per year, the School contributes to improving population health and health policy and health systems through discoveries and innovation in data science and AI, maternal, child and reproductive health, climate change, implementation and improvement sciences, preventable disease through vaccines and prevention through wellness such as with diabetes, comparative health policy, sustainable and equitable health systems, global and Indigenous health, among many other areas. This past year, $10 million philanthropic dollars was raised for research, education and knowledge translation, and the over 7000 alumni were deeply engaged through events and networking opportunities.
Your Opportunity
The Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow's Health (CanPath) project, housed at DLSPH, is Canada's largest population cohort study and a national platform for population-level health research. CanPath allows researchers to explore how genetics, environment, lifestyle, and behaviour interact and contribute to the development of cancer and other chronic diseases. It is a living population laboratory containing a wealth of data from more than 350,000 Canadians, the largest data collection of its kind in Canadian history, aged 30-74 who are voluntarily sharing their health and biological information over several decades. This data is studied by researchers to better understand disease risk factors to help unlock the mysteries of cancer and other chronic diseases. The Communications & Knowledge Translation Officer leads all national communications activities for CanPath; including maintaining the website, social media posts, press releases, brochures, newsletters, and annual reports. They also work with researchers to translate research findings for a variety of audiences.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Implementing communication plans that support outreach goals and objectives and community relations outreach plans for targeted audiences
- Advising clients on marketing and advertising strategies for multimedia channels while fostering and maintaining networks to build capacity and collaboration
- Fostering and maintaining positive relations with stakeholders to support knowledge translation activities and drafting documents for knowledge translation purposes
- Advising on the development and production of outreach materials ensuring all marketing collateral adheres to brand identity; editing post-production audio and/or visual material
- Creating and maintaining presence on social media platforms, implementing social media campaigns, research emerging social media platforms and tracking and monitoring social media analytics
- Writing story pitches and other media correspondence, developing and maintaining relationships with news reporters and media contacts
- Determining logistical details and activities for events and/or programming and handling expenses for events
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum four years of relevant experience in communications and outreach, in a university, teaching hospital or comparable environment
- Experience with or exposure to basic public health research
- Experience drafting knowledge translation documents
- Demonstrated experience coordinating digital communications projects consistent with employer branding
- Experience developing and implementing communications strategies and plans
- Experience implementing a digital media plan and maintaining information on digital platforms, including social media
- Experience developing and maintaining relationships with news reporters and media contacts
- Experience building and maintaining strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Mailchimp, video editing software, and other communications and knowledge translation software
- Experience creating data visualizations that clearly communicate public health and research data to diverse audiences
- Skilled in working with content management systems
- Superb written and oral communications skills
- Excellent research, writing, editing and digital media skills are essential
- A self-starter possessing the ability to work independently in a high-profile, time-sensitive environment while balancing competing priorities
- Must be creative, resourceful and solutions-oriented
- Willingness to develop and share technological expertise
