Role: EMR Technical Support Specialist
Location: Providence RI
Model Hybrid (3 days onsite 2 day remote)
Position Summary
The EMR Technical Support Specialist provides hands-on technical support across the full lifecycle of an enterprise Electronic Medical Record (EMR) implementation built on the WellSky platform for a state government agency. This is a technical delivery role with a foundational healthcare orientation. The specialist is responsible for the planning, configuration, testing, and implementation of user access, infrastructure, integrations, data migration, and ancillary clinical systems that connect the EMR to pharmacy, laboratory, and medical instrumentation environments.
The ideal candidate combines practical EMR integration experience with a working understanding of clinical workflows, healthcare data standards, and the regulatory and security obligations of a government healthcare program. Direct WellSky experience is not required; demonstrated experience integrating with and supporting EMR or EHR platforms is essential.
Engagement Context
This role supports a multi-phase EMR implementation in which WellSky will serve as the system of record and will integrate with a range of upstream and downstream systems, including pharmacy dispensing and e-prescribing systems, laboratory information systems, and connected medical instrumentation and devices. The specialist works within a structured project environment alongside implementation consultants, integration engineers, agency IT staff, clinical subject matter experts, and vendor resources.
Key Responsibilities
1. User Account and Access Management
Plan, configure, and support user provisioning integrated with Active Directory (AD) and supporting identity services (LDAP, SAML, SSO).
Design and maintain role based access control (RBAC): define roles, map permissions to clinical and administrative functions, and enforce least privilege.
Build and document provisioning and deprovisioning workflows aligned to onboarding, transfer, and termination events.
Establish and operate access auditing: configure audit logging, support periodic access reviews and attestations, and produce audit evidence for compliance and security reviews.
Troubleshoot authentication, authorization, and access escalation issues for end users.
2. Infrastructure and Endpoint Delivery
Participate in infrastructure planning across environments (development, test, staging, production), including capacity, performance, and availability considerations.
Plan, configure, and validate endpoints used by clinical and administrative staff, including workstations, mobile devices, kiosks, and connected clinical endpoints.
Coordinate environment readiness with agency network, security, and hosting teams (on premises, cloud, or vendor hosted SaaS as applicable).
Execute infrastructure and endpoint test plans; document configurations, baselines, and remediation steps.
Support security hardening and remediation activities in alignment with agency standards.
3. Integration and Interface Delivery
Plan, build, test, and implement interfaces between WellSky and external systems, including pharmacy, laboratory, and medical instrumentation.
Work with healthcare interoperability standards and transports, including HL7 v2, FHIR, CDA/C-CDA, NCPDP SCRIPT (e-prescribing), and X12 where applicable.
Configure and support interface engine workflows & API based integrations.
Develop message mappings, transformation logic, and validation rules; conduct end to end interface testing and reconciliation.
Manage laboratory order and result interfaces (including LOINC mapping), pharmacy and medication interfaces (including RxNorm), and device data feeds.
Diagnose and resolve interface errors, message failures, and data mismatches across connected systems.
4. Data Migration and Archiving Delivery
Plan and execute data migration from legacy systems into WellSky, including extraction, mapping, transformation, and load (ETL).
Define and apply data validation and reconciliation procedures to confirm completeness, accuracy, and integrity of migrated data.
Design and implement archiving and retention approaches consistent with state records retention requirements and healthcare data governance.
Support cutover and go live data activities, including dry runs, mock migrations, and post migration verification.
Document migration runbooks, data dictionaries, and exception handling procedures.
5. Ancillary Systems and Implementation Documentation
Plan, configure, test, and document the integration and operation of ancillary clinical systems (pharmacy, laboratory, radiology/PACS, billing and revenue cycle, and related systems) as they connect to WellSky.
Develop and maintain implementation documentation, including test plans, test scripts, configuration guides, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and runbooks.
Capture and maintain traceability between requirements, configurations, and test results.
Produce end user and support facing reference materials and contribute to knowledge transfer to agency staff.
Required Qualifications
5 or more years of technical support, implementation, or integration experience with EMR or EHR platforms (WellSky experience not required).
Demonstrated experience integrating EMR/EHR systems with pharmacy, laboratory, and/or medical device and instrumentation systems.
Working knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards, including HL7 v2 and FHIR, and exposure to one or more of CDA/C-CDA, NCPDP SCRIPT, and X12.
Hands on experience with identity and access management, including Active Directory integration, role based access control, and access auditing.
Practical experience with at least one interface engine or integration platform and with API based integration.
