About the Opportunity
The Interprofessional Practice and Learning team facilitates and advances person-centered care through evidence-based professional practice and learning strategies and programs that are designed provincially and implemented locally to enhance collaborative learning and practice. The Interprofessional Practice and Learning team takes a leadership role in creating a culture of collaboration with a focus on team-based care, evidence-informed practice, and learning and professional development to improve health outcomes for patients, families and communities. Through strong partnerships with the academic sector, regulators, and government, the Interprofessional Practice and Learning team has an integral role in influencing and operationalizing health system priorities.
Under the direction of the Manager, Simulation Learning within the Interprofessional Practice and Learning Program, the Simulation Specialist plays a critical role in supporting the design, delivery, and evaluation of simulation-based education for healthcare professionals. Working collaboratively with educators and other subject matter experts, the Simulation Specialist is responsible for the technical and operational management of simulation activities that enhance clinical competence, teamwork, communication, and patient safety.
The Simulation Specialist ensures the technical readiness and functionality of simulation equipment, including high- and low-fidelity manikins, task trainers, audiovisual recording systems, and associated software. This includes routine maintenance, troubleshooting, scenario building, and real-time operation of simulation assets or equipment during educational sessions. The Specialist also assists in the set-up, breakdown, and reset of simulated clinical environments to reflect realistic healthcare settings that support the intended learning objectives.
Beyond operational responsibilities, the Simulation Specialist contributes to curriculum planning and implementation, offering expert input on how to best integrate simulation tools into educational programs. They act as a resource and subject matter expert during the development and delivery of simulation scenarios and participate in the continuous improvement of simulation practices.
Simulation Specialists also contribute to the program’s technology-driven initiatives. They engage in innovative work such as integrating virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) into training, designing and producing custom task trainers, moulage, special effects make-up application, and developing silicone skin models. Their expertise often extends to 3D modeling and resin printing, enabling the creation of realistic, high-fidelity tools that enhance the overall learning experience.
Travel to other sites or throughout the province is required. Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required
About You
We’d love to hear from you if you have the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as science, health, technology, or engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A background that combines technical knowledge with practical experience in simulation, healthcare, or related disciplines is considered an asset.
- Minimum of two years related job experience required
- Certification in Simulation Specialist or Simulation Educator programs (i.e., CHSOS, CHSE, SLIIC) preferred
- Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 driver’s license required
- Previous experience working in a healthcare setting considered an asset
- Ability to prioritize own work
- Able to proactively keep abreast of new and emerging technologies
- Ability to communicate technical concepts to users
- Adheres to standards for simulation program operations
- Ability to troubleshoot IT/AV or Simulation Technology issues
- Ability to lift more than 40lbs, i.e., patient simulators
- Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred
