Job description

This association in DC is seeking an Accounting Director to take ownership of day-to-day accounting operations while helping steer reporting accuracy, budget planning, treasury operations, and regulatory compliance. This is a hands-on opportunity for an experienced accounting professional looking to work closely with leadership and who's ready to bring structure, precision, and process improvement to a growing finance function.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all core accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, bank and credit card reconciliations, general ledger upkeep, and month-end close, while identifying ways to streamline and automate processes.
  • Own the end-to-end payables process, from reviewing and posting invoices to running weekly payment cycles and processing expense reimbursements, while keeping vendor files current for year-end 1099 filings.
  • Handle incoming receivables by posting deposits and confirming revenue is recorded correctly, building out the documentation needed to support a clean monthly close.
  • Keep account reconciliations on schedule and financial reporting deliverables on track.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Maintain thorough, accurate accounting records and documentation.
  • Serve as a key point of contact with external auditors, vendors, and partners throughout the audit process. Be a responsive communicator throughout the process.
  • Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and financial tracking projects.
  • Collaborate with external tax advisors to prepare and file required tax documents.
  • Keep a close eye on cash positions and banking activity, overseeing wire transfers and approving payments as needed. Partner with leadership on bi-weekly payroll, including preparing, reviewing, and reconciling payroll entries.

Why You'll Love Working Here:

  • High-visibility finance role with direct access to senior leadership.
  • Tight-knit, professional team operating within a nationally recognized policy-focused association.
  • This is a hybrid role with three days on-site per week.

  • Technically strong. You have a deep knowledge of AP, AR, reconciliations, payroll, and budgeting.
  • Analytical. You are skilled at accounting research, precise calculations, and managing competing deadlines.
