Tribunal Roster of Public Members under the Health Professions Act

Role Description:

This is an excellent opportunity for Albertans looking to raise their professional and personal profile by working alongside regulated health professionals to uphold accountability and, ethical and competency standards of health professionals. By providing an external perspective on complaint review committees and/or hearing tribunals, public members support health regulatory colleges in governing their profession in a way that protects and serves public interest.

As a public member on the Tribunal Roster you will be required to:

• Participate in reviewing appeals and attending hearings.
• review and hear written and oral evidence presented to the complaint review committee or hearing tribunal, and deliberate with other committee members, with respect to complaints made against regulated health professionals;
• in accordance with the HPA, analyze, assess and weigh the evidence presented against the regulated professions’ codes of ethics, standards of practice and relevant legislation to reach a fair and impartial decision;
• participate in the development of, and review, the written decision following the close of disciplinary proceedings; and
• bring an independent and objective perspective external to that of the regulated health profession to ensure views of the health system user, third parties and the public are considered in the decisions making process.

Public members are appointed for a term of up to three-years and may be eligible for reappointment for an additional term but may only serve a maximum of six consecutive years.
