Job Description

Correctional Peace Officers – Peace River Correctional Centre - Permanent and Wage Opportunities

Are you seeking a meaningful public service career combined with a strong sense of community and a balanced northern Alberta lifestyle?

Why Peace River?

Located in Alberta’s scenic northwest, Peace River is a welcoming, family‑oriented community nestled in a stunning river valley and serves as a key regional service hub. Residents benefit from secure employment opportunities, shorter commutes, and a strong sense of community.

Outside of work, Peace River offers:

  • Year‑round outdoor recreation, including skiing, boating and fishing on the Peace River, hiking, and snowmobiling
  • Lower housing costs and reduced daily commute times compared to larger centres
  • Access to essential amenities, schools, and community services

About the Role

Correctional Peace Officers play a critical role in the safe, secure, and orderly operation of Alberta’s correctional facilities. As a CPO, you will:

  • Maintain the care and custody of individuals in secure custody
  • Support a safe environment for staff, inmates, and the public
  • Work as part of a highly trained, professional team
  • Apply legislation, policy, and professionalism in high‑responsibility situations

Permanent CPOs receive full‑time employment with comprehensive benefits, pension eligibility, and opportunities for long‑term career development within Alberta Corrections.

Wage positions may suit candidates who are looking for a more flexible or casual work schedule in corrections instead of full‑time hours. Examples include:

  • Those attending part‑time or full‑time educational programs, particularly those who are seeking experience in the human services or law enforcement sector
  • Individuals with regular part‑time or full‑time employment who have some availability outside of their regular work schedules, whether regular or seasonal, or who have shift rotations with multiple days off (e.g. teachers, educational assistants, firefighters)
  • Individuals with caregiving responsibilities who have some availability outside of their regular caregiving hours
  • Individuals considering a full‑time career in corrections who would like to gain experience and familiarity before fully transitioning from another occupation

Both Permanent and Wage employees are eligible for many salary modifiers, such as weekend premiums, shift differentials, and where applicable, overtime pay. Permanent employees working in Peace River are also eligible for the 55th to 57th Parallel Retention Allowance.

Correctional Peace Officers are required to commit to their assigned work location for an initial period of three (3) years before becoming eligible to request a transfer to another location. This period allows employees to build experience, competency, and professional foundations within their assigned centre.

Ensure all required documentation is included at the time of application, as outlined in the posting instructions. Incomplete applications may not be considered.
