Job Description Summary

The Quality Engineer – Bundle Assembly, Fuel Containers and New Fuel Receipt is responsible for multiple quality activities to support the production of nuclear fuel for commercial nuclear power plants. The Quality Engineer is part of the technical team supporting the manufacturing and inspection of nuclear fuel produced by the Fuel Manufacturing Operations (FMO) team and fuel receipt at customer sites.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring FMO products and processes meet established standards and customer quality expectations.  In this hands-on position, you will implement product quality activities to achieve compliance, qualify new products, execute process improvements, and develop inspector staff.  Additionally, you will perform customer site receipt inspection assistance for new fuel bundles and components and training of customer site staff. Responsibilities include:

  • Embrace Global Nuclear Fuel’s nuclear safety culture, where work is performed with an overriding priority on integrity, safety, security, and quality.
  • Work effectively and make positive contributions in a dynamic team environment.  Partner with manufacturing operations ensuring consistent application of quality techniques and standards.
  • Recommend and implement enhancements to the quality system. Implement continual improvement of quality work processes. Modernize quality techniques and process monitoring.
  • Perform/Analyze manufacturing process stability and capability studies. Support New Product Introduction (NPI) initiatives in FMO, including quality process development and design of experiments (DOE).
  • Identify and implement proactive solutions for incremental and step change quality process improvements through use of Lean and Six Sigma tools.
  • Maintain, review, update, and create quality documents for production activities.  Maintain the most recent interpretations of relevant quality system requirements. 
  • Quickly and effectively act when product non-conformances are detected to develop corrective measures and implement quality control systems.
  • Resolve quality issues by identifying problems, examining solution options, implementing action plans, and providing resources.
  • Resolve capability, tolerancing, and materials related quality issues.
  • Effectively communicate and reinforce commitment to quality improvement efforts.
  • Interface with a variety of individuals with diverse backgrounds, including internal and external stakeholders.
  • Train customer personnel on new fuel bundle receipt inspection. Interface with customer utility reactor engineering.
  • Review customer procedures to ensure agreement with GNF approved fuel-handling practices. Resolves customer questions, product non-conformances, and replaces defective components.
  • Perform new fuel bundle and component rework with subsequent inspections as required at customer sites. Work includes disassembly, inspection, and reassembly, and overall quality control for job.
  • Participate in internal and external audits, including direct interaction with customers.
  • Train team members in sound techniques and proper operation of quality instruments such as gages to meet quality and production targets.
  • Lead QC engineer for licensed Nuclear Shipping Container Fleet

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university in Engineering, Quality, or equivalent technical discipline, with at least 5 years of professional or military experience in manufacturing engineering, design engineering, quality engineering, quality assurance, or a similar role; OR High school diploma/equivalent with at least 7 years of professional experience in quality/manufacturing engineering, quality assurance, quality/manufacturing inspection, or a similar role.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to use computers. Frequent use of computer equipment.
  • Must be physically able to lift 60 pounds and climb open stair setups or ladders. Must be able to work at heights and over water if necessary (refuel floor).
  • Ability and willingness to maintain after hours cell phone availability.
  • Availability to travel to domestic and foreign locations on short notice. typically for one-week assignments.  Travel approximately 25% of calendar year.
  • Ability to secure Unescorted Access to Reactor Sites.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts to meet the needs of the business and/or Utility.
  • Must pass radiological safety exam, vital capacity test, and related training exams and be able to work in a radiation-controlled area.
  • Ability to certify to 49CFR/IATA/IMDG for Shipping of Dangerous goods.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, ability to conduct classroom training for 20 or more individuals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience applying Lean concepts to make process improvements.
  • Experience with nuclear fuel and/or components manufacturing.
  • Experience with Visual Inspection, Mechanical Inspection, Open Inspection Set-Ups.
  • Experience with Licensed Shipping Containers for nuclear products including powder, bundles, and irradiated components and associated regulations.
  • Experience with various welding processes and weld inspection
  • Experience reading & interpreting engineering drawings and/or blueprints.

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $91,700.00 and $152,700.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.

 

 

Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
