Job description
Every legacy newsroom has business reporters. No legacy newsrooms have non-profit reporters. This is where we come in.
Future of Good seeks a full-time, experienced journalist to fill our new Senior Philanthropy and Power Reporter role.
Responsibilities
This is a leadership position in our newsroom, and as such, 8+ years of experience with accredited media outlets is required. You could be coming from a legacy or independent media organization, writing or producing news daily, weekly or online, but you should have newsroom experience.
The Senior Philanthropy and Power reporter’s primary focus will be the vastly under-reported world of giving in Canada, and the inherent politics and power imbalances behind it. This is a position for a journalist used to asking tough questions of politicians, public figures and private citizens, and an opportunity to become an expert in a beat no one else in Canada is pursuing.
That being said, we don’t do gotcha journalism. While we want to hold power to account, we firstly want to highlight the solutions being tried, tested and used to shape the social good sector in Canada.
Our journalism is thoughtful and deeply useful to our audience, which includes non-profits, charities, philanthropic foundations, corporate impact teams, crown corporations, schools, health care systems, volunteers, front-line workers, managers, politicians, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and everything in between.
In addition, you will be the newsroom’s No. 2 and will take over when the Managing Editor is away. Those duties include copy editing, running meetings, overseeing the editorial newsletter and responding to readers.
This position will be based in Ottawa and will be mostly remote, with occasional in-person office time required. An exception to this may be made for an extraordinary candidate.
Qualifications
Musts:
Post-secondary education in journalism, political science or a related field
8+ years of journalism experience at accredited media outlets
A demonstrated interest in social impact work
Produce and edit copy in a timely manner
A keen attention to detail and the ability to juggle multiple projects
Experience moderating webinars and panels
Well-versed in CP style
An upbeat, curious and can-do attitude
Nice to have
Photo, audio and/or video experience is a definite plus
So is a second language (or third, we’re not picky!)

Attend a course, upgrade your laptop, sign up for a conference or learn new software.
Pay transparency matters.
