The sector is expanding quickly, fueled by growing awareness of the need for accessible, high-quality veterinary care. With advances in veterinary medicine, pets now have access to the most effective treatments available, making pet insurance an essential component of modern pet care.

About the Role

Overview

We are looking for a Senior Actuary (Predictive Modeling) to drive best-in-class pricing and profitability while also supporting growth of the business. As a senior technical leader on the team, you will set the direction for our predictive analytics work, advancing the sophistication of our pricing models and the tools we use to monitor the performance of our rating plans over time.

In this highly visible role, you will be a senior member of a small, close-knit actuarial team, taking ownership of complex, ambiguous problems and setting technical standards for how the team approaches actuarial pricing and financial forecasting initiatives. Time will be roughly evenly split between pricing, conversion, and retention modeling work and traditional actuarial pricing work. You will lead the evaluation of product proposals from a pricing and enterprise risk management perspective, own rate filings and responses to regulatory objections, and spearhead special pricing projects such as increased limit factor analyses, policyholder coverage utilization studies, and pricing brand new coverages. As a recognized subject matter expert, you will frequently engage in creative problem-solving and present your recommendations directly to senior leadership, actively shaping the organization’s future.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Price Elasticity & Lifetime Value: Lead the development of price elasticity curves to forecast the impact of rating changes on policyholder retention and conversion, and assess their impact on customer lifetime value
  • Conversion and Retention Forecast: Own the forecasting of policyholder retention and conversion for the portfolio based on pricing, operational changes, and business initiatives
  • Risk Segmentation: Drive advances in the risk segmentation sophistication of our rating plans by developing GLM-based rating factors (in R or Python) and championing advanced predictive modeling techniques
  • Performance Monitoring: Architect and own the tools that monitor the performance of our existing rating plans and rate level over time, including loss ratio, conversion rate, churn, and lifetime value
  • Data Analysis & Modeling: Write advanced SQL procedures to pull from large, line item level veterinary bill databases, and establish best practices for the team’s data and modeling workflows
  • Product & Coverage Analysis: Quantify and advise leadership on the impact of coverage and product changes on pricing
  • Evaluate New Product Proposals: Lead the analysis of product design proposals to determine pricing viability, impact on enterprise risk, competitive positioning, and customer value
  • Market Analysis: Maintain deep expertise in competitor filings to understand how our products and pricing stand relative to the market
  • Rate Filings & Indications: Lead rate filing and rate indication work, including the development of filings and responses to regulatory objections
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with and influence product, underwriting, marketing, BI, and IT teams, and translate complex actuarial concepts for a non-actuarial audience
  • Innovate: Pioneer creative approaches to pricing innovative coverage concepts and ideas
