Director of Human Resources
Level: Senior Leadership Team
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Direct Reports: Human Resource Manager

Position Summary
The Director of Human Resources (DHR) is responsible for leading and managing the full scope of the human resources function. Reporting to the COO and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the DHR provides strategic and operational leadership in workforce planning, employee relations, compliance, compensation and benefits, talent acquisition, development and retention, performance management, payroll, and organizational development.
This role ensures that HR systems, policies, and practices are legally compliant, operationally effective, and aligned with our strategic priorities. The DHR supervises HR staff and ensures the timely, accurate, and compliant execution of all HR operations across multiple facilities. They are responsible for elevating our people strategy by building scalable frameworks for culture, retention, and professional growth.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive human resources strategy aligned with organizational goals.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO, COO, and executive leadership team on workforce planning, risk management, compliance, and organizational effectiveness.
- Design, implement and oversee HR policies and procedures to support accountability, transparency, and high performance.
- Lead succession planning, gap analyses and talent management strategies to support long-term sustainability.
Ensure all people initiatives perpetuate our inclusive culture that values diverse backgrounds and perspectives, promotes open communication, and supports equitable opportunities for employee growth and development.
Human Resources Operations
- Oversee all core HR functions including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, compensation, benefits administration, payroll, and compliance.
- Administer and refine compensation structures across all levels of the organization; conduct regular salary benchmarking and market analysis.
- Oversee bi-weekly payroll processing using ADP and ensure accurate integration with retirement and benefits providers.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations (DOL, OSHA, FLSA, EEOC, etc.).
- Maintain and update employee handbook, HR policies, and procedural documentation.
- Manage vendor relationships for benefits, retirement plans, wellness programs, and HR systems.
- Oversee employee data management, reporting, and HR metrics to inform decision-making.
- Audit existing HR platforms and make recommendations for upgrades.
Talent Management & Employee Relations
- Lead full-cycle recruitment strategies to attract, hire, and retain high-quality, mission-aligned staff.
- Design and oversee onboarding programs that support employee success and engagement.
- Develop structured performance management systems that promote clarity, accountability, and professional growth.
- Provide guidance and coaching to managers on employee relations matters, performance concerns, corrective action, and conflict resolution.
- Conduct investigations as needed and ensure fair, consistent, and compliant outcomes.
- Develop career path frameworks and succession plans across departments.
Organizational Support & Culture
- Model our core values in all interactions and decision-making.
- Support leadership in managing organizational change and workforce transitions.
- Strengthen leadership capacity through coaching and management development support.
- Serve on internal response teams addressing emergency or critical organizational matters as needed.
Job Requirements
- Bachelors degree required, SHRM-CP and/or HRCI PHR preferred
- 4+ years’ experience managing HR generalist functions
- Experience supporting a multi-functional employee base
- Proven success designing HR programs that uphold company values and support a strong people culture
- Proven success recruiting and onboarding new talent
- Experience serving as the HR business partner to leadership
- Excellent written and verbal and active listening communication skills; ability to influence and align leaders at all levels
- Calm, solutions-oriented leadership in high-pressure moments
- Ability to work on site 4 days per week, remote 1 day per week
- Ability to manage, support and develop direct report
