The Pharmacy Technician – Inpatient, 7 On/7 Off, Night Shift supports one of Cleveland Clinic’s highest-volume inpatient pharmacy operations at Main Campus, ensuring safe and efficient medication management throughout the overnight hours. Working across a variety of inpatient service lines—including general medicine, oncology, sterile products, the operating room, pediatrics, and neurology—this caregiver plays a vital role in maintaining continuity of care. Responsibilities include controlled substance management, sterile and non-sterile compounding, oncology pharmacy support, medication preparation and distribution, triaging incoming phone calls and MAR messages, and utilizing EPIC, pharmacy carousel technology, and Pyxis automated dispensing systems. This role requires strong attention to detail, adaptability, and the ability to work independently while collaborating closely with overnight pharmacists and clinical care teams to deliver exceptional patient care.
A caregiver in this position will work a 7-on/7-off night shift schedule consisting of about 10-hour shifts from 8:30pm–7:00am. This is a 72-hour, paid-for-80-hour position, with each work week running Wednesday through Tuesday. Caregivers are expected to work three holidays as assigned. This position is based at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Preparation – Accurate and timely preparation of medications which may include selection, labeling, repackaging, non-sterile compounding, and sterile compounding.
- Assumes responsibility for the full range of pharmacy technician functions typically distributed across multiple technicians and specialized roles during daytime hours, ensuring continuous pharmacy operations and medication availability.
- Performs all distributive pharmacy technician duties with limited onsite support, including medication preparation and distribution, restocking and management of automated dispensing systems (e.g. carousel), inventory control, and sterile and non-sterile compounding.
- Provides immediate response and troubleshooting for automation failures, system downtime, and facilities disruptions impacting pharmacy operations, and communicated effectively with the on-site pharmacist and on-call pharmacy leadership, IT, facilities, and other support services to ensure resolution and continuity of care.
- Inventory – Maintains accurate and appropriate inventories of medications and supplies. Accurately and timely completion of assigned inventory audits such as cycle counts and nursing unit inspections.
- Regulatory compliance – Maintains a safe and clean work area by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Documents regulatory requirements such as temperature logs, scheduled activities, and training in an accurate and timely manner.
- Communication and teamwork – Communicates with other caregivers and patients in an effective and positive manner. Demonstrates emotional control and intelligence in managing work relationships. Attends and actively participates in team huddles and meetings. Assist with pharmacy caregiver and student training. Shares responsibility for accomplishment of the team’s tasks and goals.
- Technology – Appropriately uses information systems, technology, and automation to complete assigned tasks.
- Ability to meet competencies to work in all workflows and areas throughout inpatient needs (oncology, cardio, med access).
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Upon hire, must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National HealthCareer Association (NHA).
- Upon hire, it is required to hold an active registration through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) as either a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Pharmacy Technician Trainee.
- Caregivers with active Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Registered Pharmacy Technician registrations are required to update their registration to a Certified Pharmacy Technician registration with the OBOP within 6 months.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Six months of hospital experience
- Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program
Physical Requirements:
- Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing, walking, reaching, stretching and sitting for prolonged periods; manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer, dispensing, and compounding.
Personal Protective Equipment:
• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
