Overview

The Public Art Coordinator is a part time (20 hour) position that performs a variety of duties related to the administrative and technical support, planning, and implementation of public art projects throughout the city in accordance with the Public Art Implementation Plan and Policy. The position works independently and as a part of an experienced professional team that plans and manages a variety of complex, community-based projects, and maintains the city’s public art collection. This role regularly interfaces with artists, community task force members, city agencies, and a variety of contractors; and serves as the liaison to the Alexandria Commission for the Arts. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Public Art Senior Manager for the Office of the Arts.

Among the highlights of the position, the Public Art Coordinator will:

  • Assists in overseeing the Public Art Program operations on a daily basis.
  • Support the administration of multiple public art projects at various stages.
  • Maintain the city’s public art collection including regularly maintaining and updating electronic databases, files, image libraries, and records.
  • Coordinate public art maintenance projects from evaluating initial assessments to developing the project scope, soliciting contractors, vendor setup, scheduling work, processing payments, and overseeing successful project completion.
  • Develop project budgets and monitor the financial status of projects and accounts.
  • Develop presentations, posters, and support materials for the Public Art Program.
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and facilitation of meetings and for public art programs and events.
  • Develop public art communications in coordination with the Department’s marketing team, including drafting web updates, social media and newsletter content, and press releases.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Alexandria Commission to the Arts at their monthly meetings.
  • Coordinate with volunteers and schedule meetings with public art task forces.
  • Research public art and placemaking best practices and provide recommendations to the Public Art Senior Manager and Deputy Director.
  • Contribute to the Office of the Art team.

About the Department

The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to support the well-being of Alexandria’s residents by ensuring access to a variety of quality recreation, park and cultural experiences. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Four-Year College Degree; completion of college-level courses in recreation, physical education, business management or related fields. Experience in community recreation at a level equivalent to a Recreation Supervisor I, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Four-Year College Degree in urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, arts administration, public administration, or related field; experience working with Committees, Boards, or Commissions; an upbeat attitude, organized, detail-oriented, flexible, capable of multi-tasking, outstanding customer service, and good time management skills; a self-starter with a proactive approach to challenges; strong administrative and written communication skills; and computer skills (Adobe Suite, Microsoft 365 and web-based programs).
