About Us
CASSEN Testing Laboratories is a federally incorporated Canadian company and one of the nation's premier chemical testing laboratories. We serve a broad range of sectors — industrial, natural resources, manufacturing, transportation, energy, healthcare, government, and consulting — offering both routine and highly specialized analysis.
CASSEN is an AIHA-accredited laboratory in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 and holds the largest scope of accredited methods of any AIHA-accredited laboratory internationally, spanning ISO, ASTM, NIOSH, OSHA, MDHS, US EPA, CARB, UNODC, and validated in-house methods. We are recognized for exceptional data quality and for in-depth forensic work on complex problems including odour and health complaints, unknown contaminants, chemical exposure, machine malfunction, and fire and explosion.
For decades, CASSEN has carried out method-development and special studies for numerous government departments and agencies as well as major Canadian universities — with results published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a highly experienced Supervisory Chemist with strong supervisory experience and excellent knowledge of chemical analysis to lead day-to-day laboratory operations and mentor our analytical team. You will oversee analytical work, safeguard the quality and integrity of results, support our accreditation, and play a key role in method development and continuous improvement.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys both the chemistry and the people side of running a high-performing laboratory.
Key Responsibilities
· Supervise, schedule, and mentor a team of chemists and laboratory technicians, fostering a culture of quality, safety, and accountability.
· Manage laboratory workflow and turnaround times to meet client commitments and project deadlines.
· Provide assistance to Customer Services for queries for testing approaches and recommendations.
· Oversee laboratory operations and chemical analyses across different services.
· Operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation applicable to our methods.
· Develop, validate, and document new analytical methods; review and approve data and final reports for technical accuracy.
· Maintain and strengthen the laboratory's quality management system and support accreditation requirements (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025, AIHA LAP).
· Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, including proper handling and disposal of chemicals.
· Interact with clients to clarify testing needs, interpret results, and support investigations of odour complaints and other chemical related issues.
· Contribute to contract research projects and to the lab's ongoing technical development.
· Responsible for ensuring the preparation of new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), updating control charts, SOPs and the quality system.
· Responsible for the start-up and shut down of the laboratory on a daily basis.
· Report and work closely with the management of the laboratory.
· Other duties as required.
Qualifications
· A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry.
· Minimum 5–7 years of solid analytical laboratory experience, including at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or lead role.
· Demonstrated expertise in chemical analysis, with strong knowledge of modern analytical instrumentation and laboratory techniques.
· Must have at least 2 years of GC-MS hands-on experience
· Excellent problem-solving abilities and sound scientific judgment, with proven skill in interpreting complex analytical data.
· Strong organizational, communication, integrity and leadership skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
· Experience in an AIHA LAP / ISO/IEC 17025 accredited testing environment strongly preferred, with a solid understanding of QA/QC principles and proficiency-testing requirements.
· Familiarity with recognized analytical methods (ISO, ASTM, NIOSH, OSHA, MDHS, EPA, and similar) an asset.
· Eligible to work in Canada.
Why Join CASSEN
· Work with one of Canada's premier testing laboratories, with the ability to solve any chemical related problems.
· Contribute to varied, high-impact projects — from indoor air quality and industrial exposure to forensic investigations of fire, explosion, and unknown contaminants.
· Contribute to leading-edge method-development and research studies for major government, academic, and industry partners, with opportunities to publish.
· Join a team recognized for top-ranked data quality in international proficiency testing.
· Work with knowledgeable scientists, advanced instrumentation and specialized methods in a clean, upscale, and highly secure facility.
