We are looking for people who are excited to thrive in an environment of impactful change. Team spirit is evident at Carvana and everyday we let our passions and creativity foster innovation. We take big swings, set ambitious goals, and challenge each other to make data- and process-driven decisions in everything we do. We've been changing the game since 2013, and we're not taking our foot off the gas now.

About the team and position

Join Carvana's Legal Department in the role of Counsel, Regulatory Compliance. Carvana is looking for an attorney to support its response to regulatory examinations, investigations, inquiries, and complaints. The role also provides legal and regulatory support across Carvana's automotive sales, consumer finance, payments, and other consumer-facing financial services activities, including technology-driven financial services and fintech business models.

This role will report directly to the Senior Counsel, Consumer Finance, and will work closely with other members of the Legal and Compliance teams. Direct experience in automotive finance is helpful but not required. Backgrounds involving regulatory relations, enforcement, consumer finance, consumer protection, servicing, payments, or other high-volume consumer financial matters translate well to this role.

What you'll be doing

  • Develop a mastery of Carvana business processes and systems. Provide counsel to Carvana stakeholders, in partnership with senior members of the Legal team, on consumer finance and regulatory requirements, including consumer protection, consumer lending, payments, and servicing.
  • Support the Legal team on regulatory examinations, investigations, inquiries, and complaints, including preparing and coordinating responses, gathering information, and analyzing issues across legal, compliance, and business teams.
  • Support regulatory change management by monitoring the consumer financial regulatory landscape, including federal and state rulemaking affecting Carvana's, lending activities, drafting comments where appropriate, and translating developments into actionable guidance for the business.
  • Research and analyze consumer finance and regulatory requirements (e.g. TILA, UDAAP, FCRA, FDCPA, Regulations Z, E, and B, and NACHA rules), and provide timely, concise, business-focused advice in response to stakeholder and operational questions.
  • Advise on regulatory risk in consumer-facing operations, escalating novel or high-risk issues surfaced through complaints, disputes, or government inquiries.
  • Use AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency, issue spotting, and consistency in legal analysis.
  • Manage and execute on projects and other deliverables as assigned by Legal Team leadership.

What you should know/have

The successful candidate is a self-starter and team oriented. Candidates with experience advising, or interest in advising, technology-driven financial services or fintech businesses are a strong fit for this role. They are detail oriented, practical, and comfortable with ambiguity while managing multiple high-priority projects at once. This position requires an understanding of Carvana's business goals and how the Legal Team's efforts, delivered in partnership with senior counsel, can support those goals, while helping manage regulatory and legal risk. This position requires frequent interaction with Carvana's diverse legal and business teams and requires clear communication that presents complex information in a concise and easy-to-understand manner.

We also look for:

  • A JD and membership in good standing with a United States Bar.
  • 3-4 years of experience providing legal support to sophisticated businesses, including experience or exposure to regulatory examinations, investigations, or enforcement, consumer finance, consumer protection, consumer lending, payments, servicing, or related consumer-facing matters.
  • Experience at a national law firm, in-house, or combination of both.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior research skills and ability to condense complex regulatory and consumer finance issues into concise and easily understandable summaries.
  • Comfort using modern legal research platforms and enthusiasm for responsibly leveraging AI-based legal tools.
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to leadership within the Legal Team and collaboration across stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience influencing others to take action.
  • Experience interacting with and working directly with/for internal/external business partners.

We'd be thrilled if you also have

  • Substantive experience with state/federal auto dealer regulations and best practices.
  • Experience with regulatory complaint responses.
  • Experience tracking and analyzing federal and state rulemaking and drafting comments.
  • Consumer loan servicing experience, including a significant understanding of the complex dynamic of master servicing and subservicing.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience defining and implementing process improvements.

What we'll offer in return

  • Full-Time Salary Position with a competitive salary.
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits.
  • 401(K) with company match.
  • A multitude of perks including student loan payments, discounts on vehicles, benefits for your pets, and much more.
  • A great wellness program to keep you healthy and happy both physically and mentally.
  • Access to opportunities to expand your skill set and share your knowledge with others across the organization.
  • A company culture of promotions from within, with a start-up atmosphere allowing for varied career development.
