MEMS Design Engineer
Butterfly Network, Inc. Class A Common StockJob Description
MEMS Design Engineer (CMUT Design & Simulation)
Company Description
At Butterfly Network, we’re leading a digital revolution in medical imaging, transforming an industry that has long relied on bulky, analog systems. With our proprietary Ultrasound-on-Chip™ technology, we’re democratizing healthcare by shifting ultrasound from the expensive, stationary systems of the past to the connected, mobile, and software-enabled platforms of today. In 2018, we launched the world’s first handheld, whole-body ultrasound, Butterfly iQ – followed by iQ+ in 2020 and iQ3 in 2024, each more powerful than the last.
Our innovation doesn’t stop at hardware. Butterfly combines our advanced device with intelligent software, AI, services, and education to drive adoption of affordable, accessible imaging. Our technology is proving to help clinicians, clinics, and hospitals enhance care, cut costs, and expand imaging access. We’ve been recognized by Prix Galien USA, Fierce 50, TIME’s Best Inventions, Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas, among other awards.
We’re a team of bold thinkers, problem-solvers, and innovators ready to shape the future of medical imaging. Let’s build something extraordinary together!
Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled MEMS Design Engineer to lead the design and optimization of next-generation Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers (CMUTs). This role sits at the intersection of theoretical physics, advanced Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation, and hands-on fabrication support. You will be responsible for the full design cycle—from initial transducer architecture to supporting the transition into microfabrication.
Key Responsibilities
- CMUT Design & Modeling: Lead the architectural design of CMUT cells and arrays to meet specific performance metrics (bandwidth, sensitivity, and pressure output).
- Advanced FEM Simulation: Build and execute complex multi-physics models (acoustic-structure interaction, electrostatics) to predict device behavior and optimize performance.
- Long-term Design Exploration: Stay at the forefront of ultrasonic technology by exploring novel materials, cell geometries, and integration techniques for future product roadmaps.
- Fabrication Process Support: Collaborate closely with the foundry or cleanroom teams to develop and refine process flows (e.g., wafer bonding, sacrificial release, or CMOS integration).
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with electronics and systems teams to ensure transducer compatibility with front-end ASIC designs.
Qualifications
Baseline skills/experiences/attributes:
- Deep Domain Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of MEMS principles and ultrasonic physics (wave propagation, impedance matching, and acoustic field modeling).
- Simulation Mastery: Proficiency in FEM software (e.g., COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS, or CoventorWare) specifically for electrostatic and acoustic domains.
- Microfabrication Knowledge: A solid grasp of cleanroom technologies, including CMOS-compatible processes, photolithography, thin-film deposition, and etching.
- Educational Background: Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field with a focus on MEMS or ultrasonic transducers.
- Communication: Proficiency in English (written and verbal) for technical documentation and international collaboration.
Ideally, you also have these skills/experiences/attributes (but it’s ok if you don’t!):
- Experience with PMUT (Piezoelectric) or other ultrasonic technologies.
- Familiarity with MATLAB/Python for data analysis and automation of simulation workflows.
- Prior experience in medical imaging or gesture recognition industries.
Values
Innovation is what we do. Our values are how we make it happen. Butterflies are and believe in…
- Patient-Centric Innovators: Our mission is THE mission.
- Empowered to Impact: Every voice matters.
- One Team, One Goal: Unity fuels progress.
- Growth Champions: We embrace challenges.
- Action-Oriented Achievers: We follow through, every time.
