Job Title: Data Center Engineering Operations Technician
Location: Chantilly, VA
6- Month Contract-to-Hire
Job Summary
The Data Center Operations Engineering Technician is responsible for supporting and maintaining critical data center infrastructure and operations. This role focuses on risk management, preventative and corrective maintenance, vendor coordination, and operational excellence within a mission-critical environment. The technician will work closely with engineering, IT, and facilities teams to ensure safe,
reliable, and efficient data center operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support on-site management of shift technicians, senior technicians, subcontractors, and vendors, ensuring all work aligns with established procedures and safety standards.
- Assist in establishing performance benchmarks, conducting operational analyses, and preparing reports related to critical facility operations and maintenance.
- Coordinate with IT managers and business leaders to support projects, manage capacity, and optimize facility safety, reliability, and efficiency.
- Operate and support both routine and emergency services for critical systems, including: Switchgear and power distribution systems, Generators and UPS systems, Chillers, cooling towers, and CRAC/CRAH units
- Building monitoring and control systems (BMS)
- Assist in the design, build-out, and commissioning of new data center facilities.
- Support initiatives to improve energy efficiency and operational effectiveness of existing
- facilities.
- Maintain accurate asset tracking and inventory management for critical equipment and spare parts.
- Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and training of technical staff as needed.
- Deliver high-quality service while ensuring all customer and operational requirements are met.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or Technical Degree (Military, Trade School, or equivalent) with relevant
- experience.
- 0–2 years of relevant technical or facilities-related work experience.
- 0–2 years of leadership or management experience.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and time-management abilities.
- High attention to detail with a strong commitment to safety and quality.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-availability environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- 0–2 years of data center engineering experience (not required, just an interest in the industry)
- 0–2 years of data center operations or facilities management experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Fundamental knowledge of network design, data center layout, and low-voltage cabling (copper and fiber).
Schedule
- Day Shift
- 4 days per week, 10-hour shifts
- Front half: Sunday – Wednesday or
- Back half: Mid-week – Saturday
- Shift hours: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- Overtime available as required
