Job description

Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

The Role

Block is seeking Senior Litigation Counsel to join a team that’s responsible for the company’s most complex, high-profile litigation and regulatory enforcement matters. This role is ideal for a seasoned litigator who combines sharp strategic judgment with a pragmatic, business-oriented approach, and who thrives in a fast-moving yet highly collaborative environment.

You will play a key role in shaping litigation and enforcement strategy across a diverse portfolio of matters impacting Block’s ecosystem of products and services.

You Will

  • Lead strategy for significant litigation and regulatory enforcement matters from pre-litigation through resolution
  • Advise senior leadership on legal risk, enforcement trends, and business impact, particularly in areas affecting fintech, payments, and data use
  • Manage and partner closely with outside counsel to drive high-quality, efficient outcomes
  • Personally engage on critical aspects of matters, including legal strategy, discovery, and key filings
  • Handle complex disputes across areas such as class actions, commercial litigation, privacy, and consumer protection
  • Work exceptionally closely with other Counsel teams—including Policy, Product, Regulatory, and Corporate—to align on risk and strategy
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with teams such as Engineering, Compliance, and Risk to proactively identify and mitigate issues, consistent with business priorities

You Have

  • J.D. and active bar membership
  • 10+ years of litigation experience at a leading law firm, government agency, or in-house
  • Experience leading complex litigation and/or regulatory enforcement matters; bonus for deep securities litigation experience
  • Expertise in areas such as class actions, commercial disputes, privacy, and/or financial regulatory enforcement issues
  • Experience in litigation for a public company, including financial reporting, audit, and governance obligations
  • Strong judgment and the ability to translate legal risk into practical business guidance
  • Exceptional collaboration skills, with a track record of working effectively across legal disciplines and cross-functional teams
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
  • AI-first perspective, with interest in building and leveraging AI-driven tools for litigation management, discovery, and related workflows.
