Job Summary

The Team

The Regional Response & Recovery Operations team in the South Coast is a high-performing group of dedicated professionals from the Southwest (SWE) and Vancouver Island Coastal (VIC) regions. Collaborating closely with local authorities and First Nation communities throughout the response phase of emergency management, their work encompasses cross-agency coordination, sharing hazard- and response-specific information, and approving emergency funding in accordance with established cost eligibility criteria.

The Role

The ESS Regional Planning Officer role is responsible for enhancing regional capacity for Emergency Support Services through engagement, collaboration, and strategic planning. The work directly supports evacuees during emergencies by ensuring access to essential services like shelter, food, and basic needs, providing a crucial safety net during vulnerable times. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that strengthen community resilience, with a focus on making a real impact in people's lives. With its dynamic and fast-paced environment, this role provides professional growth and the chance to work alongside passionate, dedicated team members. Frequent deployment is a key aspect of the position.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements

• Degree in community program planning, public administration, emergency management, communication or social science or related field AND one (1) year of related experience*; OR
• Diploma in in community program planning, public administration, emergency management, communication or social science or related field AND two (2) years of related experience*; OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

• Related experience must include:
• Developing and implementing communication and engagement plans and strategies.
• Developing relationships and providing expertise and guidance to multiple interested parties.

Compiling information and preparing documents (e.g., reports, presentations, graphical materials, etc.).

• Preference may be given to applicants who have any of the following:
• Experience working with and engaging with First Nations communities and/or organizations.
• Experience leading, managing or coordinating the delivery of support services or social service programs to individuals or communities.
• Experience with emergency software applications (e.g., Web EOC, ERA, ERA Dynamics, or similar).
• Experience working in emergency management.

Provisos:

• Frequent deployment is a key aspect of the position.
• Be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures.
• Work on-call and work on-site and extended hours during emergency activations.
• Travel occasionally.

About this Position:

There is one temporary opportunity available until May 2028. This position may be extended or become permanent.

An eligibility list may be established to fill future permanent and/or temporary vacancies in Surrey and Saanich.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
