Position Summary

We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Junior Illustrator to support NIH research programs through the development of high-quality visual communications in Hamilton, Montana. This role involves producing a wide range of visual materials—including illustrations, animations, video, web content, and graphic designs—that help communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with subject matter experts and visual information specialists to transform scientific ideas into clear, engaging, and accessible visual products.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support NIH research programs by completing a variety of visualization projects as assigned.

  • Create illustrations, videos, animations, web content, and graphic designs for publication and presentation.

  • Ensure all published materials meet Section 508 compliance accessibility standards.

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and visual information specialists to interpret broad scientific concepts and translate them into accurate, effective visual materials.

  • Assist with storyboarding, designing, developing, producing, and editing video and animations to help document and communicate scientific results.

  • Assist in the design, production, reproduction, and display of original visual products and materials.

  • Participate in program activities, including sharing projects, knowledge, and technical skills with team members and stakeholders.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Illustration, Graphic Design, Animation, Visual Communications, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to create visual content across multiple formats, including illustration, video, animation, and digital/web media.

  • Familiarity with design and multimedia production tools such as Adobe Creative Suite or similar software.

  • Basic understanding of 2-D and 3-D animation, video editing, and storyboarding.

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Section 508 compliance requirements for accessible publications.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with scientific and technical subject matter experts.

  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting scientific, medical, technical, or research-based communications.

  • Familiarity with visualizing complex scientific or technical information for varied audiences.

  • Interest in biomedical research and public health communications.
