Job description

The Non-Destructive Inspection Technician (NDI) III  inspects aerospace weapon systems components and support equipment for structural integrity using nondestructive inspection methods and performs fluid analysis.  

  • Performs nondestructive inspection on structures, components, and systems.   

  • Processes parts and performs equipment standardization to carry out any necessary preparation of parts before or after inspection.

  • Detects flaws such as cracks, delaminations, voids, processing defects, and heat damage using penetrant, eddy current, magnetic particle, radiographic, optical, and ultrasonic test 
    equipment.  

  • Determines metallurgical information of components according to alloy, temper, conductivity, 
    and associated factors.   

  • Sets up and standardizes equipment, conduct tests, interprets and evaluates for acceptance or 
    rejection, and documents.  

  • Performs operator maintenance and service inspections on shop equipment and tools.  

  • Performs silver recovery functions.  

  • Follows written instructions in the techniques/methods for which certified.  

  • Develop written instructions from approved general procedures.    

  • Determines test method and technique and prepare fluids and parts for nondestructive inspection.  

  • Interprets nondestructive inspection test results and provides information about defects to repair center. 

  • Reviews x-rays.   

  • Analyzes wear metal content reports on engine lubricating oil and other fluids and recommends corrective action.  

  • Establishes radiation areas for radiographic operations.  

  • Computes and monitors personal exposure areas for radiographic operations, and monitors 
    personnel exposure data.  

  • Ensures lock out and tag out procedures are accomplished prior to maintenance on equipment.

  • Handles and disposes of hazardous waste and materials.   

  • Interpret codes, standards, and other contractual documents that control the NDT method(s) as utilized by the employer.  

  • Prepares and verifies the adequacy of procedures in the method certified.  

  • Approve NDT procedures and other NDT related work instructions for technical adequacy in the method in which they are certified.  

  • Provides the necessary guidance and supervision to trainers and Level I and II personnel in the 
    technique/method in which they are certified.  

  • Provide or direct training, examination, and certification of personnel in the method in which they are certified.  

  • Assumes technical responsibility for the NDT staff.  

Minimum Requirements:

  • Shall be trained and qualified per NAS 410 or ASNT-CP-189.

  • Three (3) or more years’ experience as an aviation inspector.

  • Familiar with the scope and limitations of the technique/method in which they are certified.  

  • Familiar with the codes, standards, and other contractual documents that control the method as utilized by the employer.  

  • Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.  Note:  US Citizenship is required for a facility credentials/authorization at the work location.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Have the skills and knowledge to set up and standardize equipment, conduct tests, interpret and evaluate for acceptance or rejection, and document.

  • Thoroughly familiar with the scope and limitations of the technique/method in which they are certified.

  • Capable of providing the necessary guidance and supervision to trainers and Level I and II personnel in the technique/method in which they are certified.

  • Familiar with the codes, standards, and other contractual documents that control the method as utilized by the employer.

  • Capable of developing written instructions from approved general procedures.

  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems or other technology as applicable to fabrication, repair, operation and maintenance requirements.

  • Efficient in record keeping and preparation of reports; capable of reviewing other people's work and determining accuracy and conformity to standards.

  • Excellent organizational skills in prioritizing workload to meet aircraft delivery schedule.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.

  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.

  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.

  • May be required to lift heavy objects whose weight may exceed 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications

  • Will handle dirty parts and lubricants.

  • Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, etc.

  • Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds

  • May work in maintenance shop or outside.

  • Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.

  • May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment

  • May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
