The Calgary Section of Newborn Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics, Alberta Health Services invites application for full time Physician Assistant position. The successful candidate will provide patient care in one of the three Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at South Health campus, Peter Lougheed and Rockyview General hospitals under the supervision of a Neonatologist or General Pediatrician and in the two Level III NICU at Foothills and Alberta Children’s Hospital under the supervision of a Neonatologist. What We Do The Section of Newborn Critical Care operating out of the 5 Calgary Zone Hospitals, manages 129 acute critical care beds and admits an average of 2800 newborns. Calgary and southern Alberta is served by two Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units at the Foothills Medical Centre and Alberta Children's Hospital, and three Level II NICUs at the Peter Lougheed Hospital, Rockyview General Hospital and South Health Campus. In addition, the Neonatal Program includes nationally recognized Neonatal Follow-up Clinic (NFC), Southern Alberta Neonatal Transport Program (SANTS) and Antenatal Consultation service.
Description
The Physician Assistant working as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team, under the supervision of a neonatologist/ pediatrician will work 38.5 hours/ week inclusive of on-calls and weekends to provide comprehensive and quality clinical care to preterm and term gestation neonates with medical, surgical, and chronic conditions. The responsibilities include sharing day-to-day clinical duties in the NICU with Tier 1 staff (fellows, clinical assistants, nurse practitioners and residents), attending newborn deliveries, documentation of admission, discharge, daily progress notes, procedures etc. examination of patients and formulating care plans under the guidance of the attending or supervising physician. Other responsibilities include familiarizing with unit practices and guidelines to ensure consistency of care, communication with families and coordination of care for patients being discharged, collaboration with multidisciplinary team members and specialists and participation in quality improvement initiatives and continuing medical education activities of the section.

Required Qualifications:
Only Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada who have successfully completed Physician Assistant (PA) training and are eligible for College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) registration can apply. Candidates must submit a Curriculum Vitae and evidence of PA training in a recognized Physician Assistant program. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The successful applicant will be responsible for registering and maintaining professional licensure with the CPSA. During the initial 6 – 9 months of employment, orientation and training will be provided to support acquisition of knowledge and skill in Neonatal conditions and ensure smooth transition.
Additional Required Qualifications:
The 129 Level II and Level III beds in the 5 NICUs in Calgary provide comprehensive neonatal care in Southern Alberta. The Foothills hospital is the designated high risk perinatal centre for Southern Alberta and SE British Columbia and, is one of the largest perinatal centers in Canada with the highest admission rate. The 14 bedded NICU at Alberta Children’s Hospital serves neonates with surgical, neurocritical, cardiac and complex care needs. There are 30 neonatologists with diverse specialized interests in education, clinical research, basic sciences research, neonatal follow-up, and a group of neonatologists trained in functional echocardiography and point-of-care bedside ultrasound. The Neonatal Follow-Up Program is nationally recognized and has strong national benchmarking and research collaboration. There are many educational rounds and seminars every week. The Continuing Medical Education program (CME) is one of the best in the country and invites world renowned experts. There are opportunities for professional development including participation in research, QI, educational initiatives, and committees and working groups.
