Acton’s Lower Shannon Farms is a one-of-a-kind, community-focused farm known for its positive, upbeat atmosphere and hands-on learning environment. From our retrofitted grain bin ice cream shop—Memphster’s Grain Freeze Bin—to our greenhouses and livestock, we offer a dynamic and engaging workplace where no two days are the same.

Position Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and hardworking Summer Student to join our team. This role is primarily customer-facing, working as a barista and ice cream server in our unique grain bin café, while also supporting various farm operations.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, being outdoors, and gaining a wide range of practical skills in agriculture and food service.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service & Food Service

  • Serve ice cream and prepare beverages in Memphster’s Grain Freeze Bin
  • Provide friendly, upbeat customer service in a fast-paced environment
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of service areas

Kitchen Support

  • Assist in a commercial kitchen with food preparation
  • Support basic canning and food preservation tasks
  • Follow food safety and sanitation standards

Greenhouse & Farm Work

  • Assist with harvesting, pruning, clipping, and plant care
  • Support general greenhouse and crop maintenance

Livestock Support (Limited & Supervised)

  • Occasionally assist with care of laying hens, sheep, pygmy goats, pony, donkeys, and cows
  • Tasks will be controlled, supervised, and appropriate for experience level

What You’ll Learn

  • Fundamentals of plant health and growing
  • Basics of canning and food preservation
  • Introductory animal husbandry practices
  • Customer service and food service skills in a unique setting

Qualifications

  • Friendly, positive attitude and strong customer service skills
  • Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors in varying conditions
  • Ability to handle physically active, hands-on work
  • Reliable, punctual, and a team player
  • Food Safety Certificate is an asset (but not required)
  • Previous barista, food service, or farm experience is an asset
