Job description
The work:
- Manage and optimize both relational and NoSQL databases, ensuring high performance and reliability across platforms such as MS SQL and PostgreSQL
- Design robust schemas, tune queries, and implement best practices for data storage and retrieval
- Modernize and consolidate complex data architectures
- Lead initiatives to migrate data models and streamline storage solutions
- Safeguard the integrity and security of data platforms by implementing advanced security protocols, including Kerberos authentication, TLS encryption, and role-based access controls
- Establish comprehensive backup and disaster recovery strategies, as well as ensure observability and operational excellence across all database systems
- Monitor database performance, troubleshoot issues, and proactively optimize systems for maximum uptime and reliability
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align database solutions with organizational objectives and technical requirements
Here's what you need:
- Bachelor's degree and 10 years work experience
- Must have 3 years of experience working with AWS and cloud infrastructure, cloud data systems, and large‑scale storage technologies
- Hands-on experience administering and optimizing relational databases (e.g., MS SQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL platforms
- Strong proficiency in database performance tuning, query optimization, and schema design
- Experience implementing and managing database security controls (e.g., TLS/SSL, IAM/RBAC, encryption at rest/in transit)
- Familiarity with backup, restore, disaster recovery, and high‑availability strategies
- Experience migrating data models, refactoring legacy database systems, or consolidating data platforms
- Working knowledge of infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) for provisioning cloud database resources
- Experience with observability tools and practices such as monitoring, alerting, and logging for database systems
- Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex database issues
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, communicate technical concepts clearly, and translate requirements into scalable data solutions
- Must have an active Top-Secret clearance and be eligible for SCI
- Ability to work 100% on site in Washington, DC
Bonus points if you have:
- Experience with distributed systems architecture, data migration, and consolidation projects
