Job Description

Do you want to be a veterinarian? Working as an Exam Room Assistant is a great place to start.

Let’s be honest: veterinary medicine is not all puppies and kittens. It is also full schedules, anxious clients, emotional moments, and sometimes long days held together by caffeine, teamwork, and a slightly dark sense of humour.

If you are serious about becoming a veterinarian and want real-world experience to help strengthen your vet school application — while gaining a genuine understanding of what small animal general practice actually looks like —An Exam Room Assistant role may be a great fit for you.

NOTE: This role requires a minimum 1-year full time commitment and is not suitable for summer-only applicants.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting veterinarians during appointments by helping gather histories, prepare patients, and support exam room flow
  • Working closely with clients and patients in the exam room in a professional, compassionate, and confident manner
  • Assisting with medical record documentation and ensuring accurate, timely entries in the patient record
  • Supporting communication and continuity between veterinarians, RVTs, and the rest of the care team
  • Safely and kindly restraining patients for examinations, diagnostics, sample collection, imaging, treatments, and procedures
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and well-stocked hospital environment, including exam rooms, treatment areas, kennels, and support spaces
  • Supporting patient care in hospital, including basic husbandry, patient comfort, monitoring, cleaning, feeding, walking, and documenting observations
  • Assisting with general hospital duties such as laundry, restocking, unpacking orders, and instrument care
  • Answering phones and supporting front-of-house workflow as needed

Experience - The strongest candidates for this role are:

  • Interested in pursuing veterinary school or a long-term career in veterinary medicine

  • Confident handling animals and interested in developing strong patient restraint and animal care skills
  • Familiar with basic small animal preventive care, including vaccines, parasite prevention, common wellness recommendations, and routine veterinary terminology
  • Eager to learn, receptive to feedback, and motivated to grow in a clinical environment
  • Organized, reliable, and able to stay calm and effective in a busy practice setting
  • Team-oriented and willing to contribute to both the medical and practical parts of hospital life

This position is often an excellent fit for applicants who have already applied to veterinary school and are looking to strengthen their application through additional high-quality clinical experience.
