Wilson & Company, Inc., Engineers & Architects, a national multi-disciplined engineering and architecture consulting firm, is currently seeking a full-time Environmental Professional – Biologist and Wetland Specialist to join our Midwest Region team in Omaha, Nebraska. You’ll join our growing team of environmental professionals from across the company to perform biological surveys, wetland delineations, draft reports and site forms, conduct environmental analyses, and deliver quality documents supporting our federal, state, local, and tribal clients under the Clean Water Act (CWA), the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and other applicable federal and state regulations for environmental resource management.
In this position, you will perform fieldwork, evaluate potential environmental impacts and mitigation requirements, and write technical reports for wetland and biological resources on a variety of transportation, railroad, land development, and stormwater/wastewater projects. Biological resources include, but are not limited to, wetland delineation and mitigation, threatened and endangered species, wildlife, vegetation, noxious weeds, and environmental permitting. Aside from biological resources, we will also train you in compliance with NEPA and other environmental laws. Strong writing skills are required and experience with GIS is preferred. For the right candidate, this position has the potential to provide rapid growth.
All Wilson & Company environmental staff work collaboratively with engineering professionals in a variety of disciplines across the firm to meet project goals, and with other key staff to build relationships both locally and in all states where Wilson & Company is conducting environmental project work. Strong communication skills are required.
Essential Job Functions
- Provide technical environmental resource expertise for wetland and biological resources.
- Conduct fieldwork as it relates to project needs, includes travel throughout Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas, and out-of-state travel to support a national environmental program.
- Prepare biological resource reports, including Technical Memos, Biological Assessments, and Biological Evaluations.
- Consult with jurisdictional and regulatory agencies and other stakeholders, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, etc.
- Additional technical environmental resource expertise in one or more of the following disciplines will also be considered: hazardous materials; noise; water quality; historic and/or cultural resources; Section 4(f) assessments; air quality; Stormwater Pollution and Prevention Plan (SWPPP).
- Collaborate on the preparation of environmental and NEPA documentation, in part or in whole, including resource-specific technical reports, EIDs, CEs, EAs, and EISs.
- Plan and conduct field delineations of Waters of the U.S., including wetlands, and conduct stream assessments.
- Prepare delineation reports, functional assessments, mitigation plans, and Jurisdictional Determinations (JD) requests.
- Prepare permit applications under Sections 404/401 of the Clean Water Act and NPDES Section 402.
- Coordinate with state, federal, and local regulatory agencies.
- Conduct vegetation and species habitat surveys.
- Complete database reviews and background research to support NEPA documents and prepare NEPA documentation.
- Prepare Section 7 consultations with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Task Management Duties
- Serve as project and/or task manager for environmental/NEPA projects in Midwest and firmwide; coordinate with and support others for overall project performance and deliver projects to clients on schedule and on budget.
- Support the national environmental program through marketing, proposal preparation, and environmental analysis and documentation.
- Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with engineering professionals in a variety of disciplines across Wilson & Company to meet project goals, and other key staff to build client relationships in the states where Wilson & Company is conducting environmental project work.
Required Skills And Experience
- Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biology, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Planning or similar discipline. Advanced degrees will be given due attention.
- 2+ years of experience conducting T&E assessments, wetland delineations, and permitting with the Arid West, Western Mountain, Great Plains, and/or Midwest Supplements.
- 2+ years of experience preparing T&E and wetland delineation reports, Section 404 permits, and mitigation plans.
- T&E assessment and wetland delineation field skills and methodology, GPS data collection, and ArcGIS proficiency.
- Ability to identify wetlands and jurisdictional waters of the United States.
- Working knowledge and ability to identify various soils and vegetation types typically found in the Midwest region.
- Working knowledge and ability to identify various wildlife species and habitats typically found in the Midwest region.
- Proven ability to work on a team of professionals to accomplish project and program goals.
- Task management skills with proven ability to complete work on schedule and within budget.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in software including the Microsoft suite of programs and ArcGIS.
Preferred Skills And Experience
- 4+ years of experience conducting T&E assessments, wetland delineations, and permitting with the Arid West, Western Mountain, Great Plains, and/or Midwest Supplements.
- 4+ years of experience preparing T&E and wetland delineation reports, Section 404 permits, and mitigation plans.
- Professional certifications, specifically Wetland Professional in Training (WPIT), Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) or ability to qualify as PWS.
- Environmental project management experience for NEPA and other environmental projects at the federal, state, local and tribal level.
- Experience coordinating with environmental resource and regulatory agencies in Nebraska, including the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT).
- Technical writing skills with experience authoring NEPA documents.
Job Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Annual Salary Range: $55,000 - $75,000 + depending on experience.
(Note: Title and level (Environmental Professional I or II) will be determined based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications)
