The Opportunity (NRC-IRAP Youth Employment Program)

This position is offered in partnership with the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). It is designed as a mentored career-start for a high-potential graduate to lead a technical innovation project within our product development cycle.

Mandatory IRAP Eligibility Criteria To be eligible for this specific funded role, applicants must meet all the following:

● Age: Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the project.

● Education: A recent post-secondary graduate (Degree or Diploma).

● Status: A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person granted refugee status in Canada.

● Participation: A first-time participant in a Youth Employment Strategy (YES) work experience program.

● Legality: Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Role Overview

Vogt Industries is seeking an Industrial or Systems Engineering graduate to support the design and implementation of internal operational systems.

This role focuses on improving efficiency, scalability, and performance across warehouse operations, inventory management, and fulfillment processes. The selected candidate will contribute to both system design and hands-on implementation within a dynamic production and distribution environment.

Project Scope The project involves analyzing and improving internal operational workflows and systems. This includes evaluating current processes, identifying inefficiencies, and supporting the design and implementation of improved methods for inventory handling, storage, and order fulfillment.

Key Responsibilities1. Warehouse Systems Design

• Design optimized warehouse layouts within a constrained footprint
• Evaluate and implement storage systems (bins, flow rack, hybrid models)
• Develop location and binning strategies for inventory
• Inventory & System Structure
• Support improvements to inventory organization and tracking
• Define storage logic and material flow systems
• Assist in implementing replenishment strategies
• Process Engineering
• Redesign picking and fulfillment workflows
• Develop standardized procedures to reduce variability and error
• Improve packaging and order assembly processes
• Data Analysis & Optimization
• Analyze picking times, throughput, and bottlenecks
• Develop KPIs for operational performance
• Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities
• Implementation & Testing
• Support pilot rollout of improved systems
• Work directly on the warehouse floor to validate processes
• Assist with training and adoption of new workflows

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
• Strong analytical and systems thinking ability
• Interest in operations, manufacturing, or supply chain systems
• Ability to work in both analytical and hands-on environments

Preferred

• Experience with Lean, 5S, or process improvement methodologies
• Familiarity with warehouse operations or logistics systems
• Basic proficiency in Excel or data analysis tools
