Virginia Waters & Wetlands, Inc. is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Environmental Scientist to join our dynamic environmental consulting team. This role places you at the forefront of field-based environmental science, leading wetland and stream delineations while supporting critical projects that balance development with ecological preservation. You will work across diverse landscapes, applying technical expertise, GIS tools, and regulatory knowledge to deliver high-quality environmental assessments.
As a key contributor, you will collaborate with scientists, engineers, and regulatory agencies to guide projects through complex environmental requirements, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local standards. This position offers an exciting blend of hands-on fieldwork, data analysis, and technical reporting, providing opportunities to make a meaningful impact on watershed health, habitat conservation, and sustainable land use.
Responsibilities
- Lead wetland walkovers and delineate streams and wetlands, producing accurate jurisdictional boundary determinations in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Conduct field assessments including Perennial Flow Determinations (PFD), Stream Attributes Assessment Methodology (SAAM), and Resource Protection Area (RPA) delineations.
- Utilize GIS tools (ArcGIS, AutoCAD) and GPS equipment to map, analyze, and document environmental features and site conditions.
- Support environmental permitting through Chesapeake Bay impact analyses, NPDES studies, water quality assessments, and floodplain evaluations.
- Perform endangered species surveys and habitat assessments to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Collect field data, conduct environmental monitoring, and prepare clear, professional technical reports and Environmental Impact Reports.
- Assist with nutrient and mitigation credit evaluations for wetlands and streams.
- Collaborate with engineers, planners, and regulatory agencies to deliver compliant and environmentally responsible project outcomes.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, research papers, and documentation using clear technical writing standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography, or related field.
- Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS)
- International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist, is a plus
- Excellent technical writing abilities for preparing detailed reports and documentation.
- Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain and carry field equipment in varying weather conditions
Pay: $52,000.00 - $66,000.00 per year
