Lead Accountant (CPA, LPA) – Construction Practice

Location: Toronto, Onsite

Compensation: $125,000 – $135,000 CAD + Bonus + Benefits

About the Opportunity

I’m currently working exclusively with a growing, construction-focused accounting firm to identify a Lead Accountant (CPA, LPA) who can play a critical role in the firm’s next stage of growth. This is a key hire where you’ll work directly with the owner (CPA) and a team of designated professionals, taking ownership of backend accounting operations while supporting both the firm and its client base.

The Role

The right person will be someone who can step in with confidence, operate independently, and bring structure, clarity, and technical strength to a fast-evolving environment. This position is responsible for leading accounting operations across a portfolio of construction clients, while also contributing to internal process improvements and team development.

Key Responsibilities

• Client Portfolio Management: Lead full-cycle accounting across multiple client engagements, acting as the primary technical point of contact for the firm.
• Financial Reporting & Analysis: Own month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes; review financials, reconciliations, and working papers to ensure accuracy.
• Construction-Specific Accounting: Manage detailed Job Costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules, and revenue recognition (Percentage of Completion) to track project profitability.
• Compliance & Tax: Oversee HST filings, payroll remittances, and corporate tax compliance (including T2s) for the client base.
• Operational Oversight: Partner with client Project Managers to review budget vs. actuals, providing early warnings and strategic insights on potential cost overruns.
• Strategic Insights & Firm Growth: Utilize advanced Excel and data analysis to drive internal process improvements and mentor junior team members, translating financial data into actionable insights for clients.

Requirements

• Designation: Must hold a Canadian CPA, LPA designation in good standing.
• Industry Experience: 5+ years of progressive experience in an accounting firm environment, with a heavy emphasis on Construction Accounting and Costing.
• Technical Prowess: Deep understanding of ASPE/IFRS as it relates to construction, specifically revenue recognition and WIP accounting.
• Systems: Proficiency in industry-standard accounting software (Sage, QuickBooks) and advanced Excel skills (Pivot Tables, Data Modeling).

Communication: Ability to manage multiple client relationships and explain complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
