Description

NULN33/NULN23-Overhead Transmission Apprentice Lineperson. This position assists with building, maintaining, and repairing overhead transmission lines using approved standards under the direction of forepersons, project managers, and supervisors. A willingness to travel is required.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Assist with installation, connection, and rigging in a high‑voltage environment.
  • Erect, frame, and replace poles.
  • Operate aerial trucks, digger derricks, and associated equipment safely.
  • Assist in construction of transmission and substation facilities.
  • Work on transmission lines at voltages from 69 kV to 500 kV.
  • Establish OSHA and company/customer safety requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to climb wood poles, steel poles, and lattice steel towers without assistance from a boom or bucket truck.
  • Ability to work at heights up to and above 100 feet.
  • Able to drive all vehicles assigned to the line crew.

Education & Experience

Experience with digger derricks and bucket trucks is required.

License & Certifications

  • CDL highly preferred but not required.
  • Driver’s license required.

Travel Requirements

Must be willing to travel and work away from home.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional (up to 33%): Sitting, kneeling, crawling.
  • Frequent (up to 66%): Stooping, squatting, body twisting, manual dexterity, reading, climbing ladders, climbing on/off truck, climbing poles, gripping, climbing stairs.
  • Continuous (up to 100%): Standing, walking, sensory functions, speaking clearly, seeing distant, reaching, range of motion, hearing, depth perception, colour vision, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting 10–50 lbs, balancing.

Safety

Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry, employees must:

  • Have sufficient eyesight to judge distance and coordination with equipment.
  • Maintain attention and concentration for extended periods.
  • Withstand weather exposure while completing work assignments.
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Enter and exit vehicles frequently.
  • Traverse various terrain with endurance.
  • Perform duties throughout an 8‑ or 10‑hour day.
  • Communicate and handle conflict professionally.

Additional requirements

  • Work nights, weekends, and holidays for extended periods; may be required to perform duties during emergencies and disasters.
  • Work around hazardous equipment.
  • Work with energized parts or equipment.
  • Work around excessive noise; proper hearing protection required.
  • Work at varying heights above ground, in manholes, and/or in confined spaces with proper PPE.
