UX/UI Design Intern

Only local applicants in the vicinity of Victoria, British Columbia, will be considered for this position.

Upanup is looking for a UX/UI Design Intern to help us create accessible, professional, and user-friendly website designs for our growing client base of government and utility providers. This is a contract internship position spanning from May 2026 until December 2026.

Job Description

• Assist with the design of interfaces and layouts that meet client goals and scope, user experience requirements and brand standards, and accessibility requirements
• Assist with usability testing, including facilitating user testing sessions, contributing to documented analysis on client projects, writing scripts, and creating scenarios
• Provide inputs and adjustments to design files as needed by Upanup's team of UX and Strategy professionals
• Participate in internal and client reviews, providing support to the project team
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams
• Contribute to internal tasks and projects

Requirements

• Experience in a professional UX/UI design environment OR equivalent school experience
• Proficiency in Figma including prototyping
• Strong working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks and to meet tight timelines
• An ambitious attitude, positive outlook, and friendly disposition
• Post‑secondary degree or diploma in a design‑related field (completed or in progress) or equivalent practical experience

Preference may be given to candidates with any of the following:

• Current enrollment in a Canadian post‑secondary institution
• Previous work experience in municipal government or utilities sectors
• Experience using or designing for content management systems such as Drupal or WordPress
• Experience writing HTML and CSS
• Freelance work or agency experience
• Experience with illustration, graphic design, and/or print layout
• Working knowledge of web accessibility and/or experience using assistive technology

What You Can Expect

• Compensation of $24 to $26 per hour at 37.5 hours per week
• Successful candidate expected to work full-time at Upanup's office in downtown Victoria
• Internship to start in early or mid‑May 2026, lasting until December 2026
